Different coloured sofas?

I am planning to get 2 new sofas for my lounge, plus a foot stool and possibly a chair. What I dont know is do I need to get the sofas the same colour or would them being different colours work as long as they were the same sofa? Thanks for any advice.

You'll get people advocating both, plus those who say have completely different if you are having different colours. Have what you want and like - it's your home and you have to live with them.

We have different sofas but they are by the same company and matching shape - they work I think

Different definitely works, we just bought two new and although they are the same, the ones we have currently are different and the same in the second reception room, it works as long as there is some form of theme ie similar style or color palette.

We have one brown leather sofa and another yellowish material sofa. They are a similar size and shape, but not exactly the same. I think they look fine, but I would say that, wouldn't it?

We've been looking at sofas recently and I would say the only thing that matters is that they're complimentary! We were planning on two completely different sofas in different colours, but with a similar style and complimentary colour before we realised they wouldn't fit.

Personally I'd go completely different but complementary. If one is squishy make the other more structured - one big 3 seater and one small 2 seater.

I don't like the 'matchy' look so always have different sofas. If you look in design magazines - as I do, much too much of the time - you never see matching chairs/sofas.

I think they look best if they are completely different - ie a fabric sofa and a leather one, or a squishy plain sofa with a striped formal one, etc...

I'm another who doesn't like 'matchy'.

The last 2 times we've bought sitting room sofas we've gone for different colours but same design although one is very large and one a regular 2 seater.

Non matching here, large one darker colour same fabric and style, chair and two seater in lighter contrast, but same fabric.

Thanks everyone! So, I was originally planning on 2 velvet sofas but now thinking maybe one velvet and one different coloured fabric rather than different coloured velvet. Now all I need is a rug, lamps, curtains etc and job done!

Thinking of this onewww.sofa.com/shop/sofas/3-seat/holly/customize/size/130/fabric/CMVLPN/ although cant quite decide on the colour / velvetyness between it and this slightly darker and more expensive onewww.sofa.com/shop/sofas/3-seat/holly/customize/size/130/fabric/RSVWIN/

And this was the lighter one - in the pictures I prefer this one but on the fabric swatches I like the other one as it seems nicer velvet.

I liked this too and wondered about it as a contrast

I have one in red velvet, one in oatmeal and a chair and footstool in oatmeal/red stripe. Will go take a picture to let you see.

Not great pictures. Have been spot cleaning my rug and the room is in a bit of disarray!

OP I love the first sofa in WIne (your first link). I also liked the second colour but if you've seen the swatches you know what's best.

I wouldn't go with the grey as a contrast to be honest - I think you need to be a bit braver than going for a plain neutral. As the purple sofa is already plain, go for another colour in the same palette (a lavendar or pink for example) in a bold pattern. I love checks or stripes - they always look really classy.

Will try to find some examples...

Or a blue I meant to say ... also in the same palette Smile

I'm not really a brave person! I tend to like plain things but do want my room to look warm and good! Not sure i am up to picking a pattern! I was thinking I could choose a fancier rug.

The red looks lovely in the pics and looks hood with the chair and sofa and your rug.

If there is anything people think would look good I would love to see it!

Thanks
