This is our dining room. And playroom. I want to change it so we can sit at the fire and watch tv. But need to keep the toy storage and want to have a table too. The table can be made smaller.

I was thinking move the table to the right and maybe two armchairs?

Also realise we need a picture or mirror over the fireplace.

Can you sketch a plan of the room? It's hard to work out how it all fits from your pictures.

I think toy storage in a dual use adult/ child room is always best in tubs that look nice when away. Like in the example (but different colours obviously!). You can often buy lidded tubs inexpensively in places like Quality Save etc.

The room looks really large; my main cricitism at the moment would be that the table looks a bit stranded in the space so I think it should be easy to fit in the extras you want.

To be honest there's way too many toys. A massive clear out is on the books!

Can you put the dining table along the big window? It's a lovely room btw!

Make the table smaller and turn it the other way round and under the window.
You can easily fit a nice sofa and toy storage in that lovely big room it will look nice when it's done it's just find the right accompanying pieces.

Turning table round in window is definitely a good option.

A smaller round table in the bottom right (on drawing) might be even better, with a sofa and couple of armchairs in front of the fire.

Agree with the others. if the room serves two very distinct purposes then create two areas. The table goes smaller and goes the other way in the window. You then make a playroom/tv area where the TV is.

Will definitely try the table smaller and the other way. We want to still be able to have it full size for Christmas etc which is why I'm dithering over a sofa. Chairs would be easier to lift into the hall which is quite big too.

Yes, it needs zoning! Table the other way by window, some kind of zoning divided between it and toy area (sofa, bright rug in toy area or something - I don't mean an actual divider.)

How many of you usually sit at the table?

Nice room - no offence but the table looks very black and heavy and overpowers the room. Have you considered a new table that seats less for day to day and has 2 extended leaves to it so at larger gatherings it can seat more people?

That way if you turn it sideways it won't totally eat up the room? How about a sofa and arm chair and beanbags for the kids so that you can juggle around when extending and pop the armchair in the window corner and fit it all in?

We can't afford a new one Sad but will definitely try it made smaller.

I'm going to suggest something different!

I would personally try to make everything in the room usable together rather than trying to separate them. This also gives lots of play area on the floor and the table could always be pushed against the wall.

That's good too although the sofa is a long way away from the tv - I like to goggle clearly!!
