Help me choose paint colour scheme for my new house

After a protracted (and very stressful) sale and purchase we will finally be completing on our new house on the 9th of February.

I am very keen to get it redecorated ASAP as the current scheme is... well... eclectic. And have booked a decorator to come give me a quote for the job on the 16th so really need to get cracking with ordering sample pots etc.

In terms of paint, I prefer Little Greene to F&B but have read very good things about Mylands paints during my research.

The downstairs is a very large open plan area and I would like to create flow by sticking to the same colour throughout on walls. Creams are out of the question and I would like to avoid cool greys. The house has plenty of natural light.

See Pics

Currently I am leaning towards LG French Grey for walls and LG Slaked Lime for panelling and wood. Also considering doing the "library" and "snug" walls in LG French Grey Dark

I also like Mylands Smithfield although it seems a lot "blue-er" on the monitor than on the sample card, with Crace for the snug and library Cotton Street for the woodwork - Althouth here I might keep Smithfield across the panelling too... not sure

So I definitely ordering all of those as sample pots - but I also really like

LG Portland Stone but not sure what would go well with it, maybe LG Clay Pale

Questions

  1. Should we do the ceilings as the same colour as the walls (Leaning towards this) or the woodwork?
  2. What would you do with the supporting pillars?
3)Any ideas for getting rid of the stencilling from the fireplace?

FOr the most part, the downstairs still has the original wooden church floor, and I am planning on taking up the carpet and having the floor sanded and polished but what to do about the stair case? I think it will look terrible against the original floor. Would you paint and replace runner? Replace staircase?

Very excited to get going on this [Grin]

Hello,

I am not surprised you are excited, the place looks fabulous! Congratulations!!

I love the idea of a French green-ey grey that would work well with wooden floors. And a dark snug, spot on.

  1. I would definitely paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls and the woodwork. It would look elegant, uniting the space and making it work as one. Also, the pillars supporting the arches.
  2. It would be fun to give the pillars standing in the middle a different shade of grey (or even black), but then there might be too many and it could become too busy. In any case, just one colour all along the length. Perhaps even remove/change the panelling at the bottom of the pillars?
  3. I would paint the fireplace a stony colour, a more beige shade of grey.
As far as the staircase, if the wooden floors are a different colour, ie natural wood, then it would have to be painted, perhaps in the darker colour of the snug, or a very different colour to be striking and stand out? I suppose it will depend on your furnishings as well.
I would say out with the runner, but it is too noisy, there are some nice ones out there.

Also, I would have the floors sanded before decorating, it is a very dusty business!

    I hope this helps.
Good luck and please do post the pics when you're done! :)

Wow, your house is so fab! That's exciting.

Are you really totally sold on grey? It has pretty much had it's moment and you might date the decor.

That said, your space has so much potential, I am sure it will look amazing.

Thanks all.

Not sold on grey but want a neural colour, and with the big space not keen on blues. Definitely don't want anything cream/pink.

Do you have any other colour suggestions AddTo

Thanks for the tip RE sanding the floors.

I am planning on keeping the doors/pulpit/original pew all natural.

Our furnishings are a mixture of old victoriana and ikea crap. I am planning on changing a lot and buying quite a few new bits in the coming months.

We also need to remodel upstairs in the next year or so but will need to move in first.

There are so many possibilities with that tongue and grove panelling. I might consider painting the woodwork in a colour and keeping the walls white or neutral. Love a painted white floor, painted white wood work and painted white walls, but you need to really anchor a scheme like that with lots of clever colour in the art and accessories.

Because of the fab space and all the potential of the arch and the colums, you can delineate spaces with colours, or with wallpaper or pattern, and keep it united (walls or woodwork). Such an incredible project.

Fab place, congratulations! The greeny/greys you've picked look perfect, I would be tempted to do everything (except the wood that you wanted to leave) in diff shades of that colour, I see it comes in 4 shades including pale, mid and dark, so one for ceiling, one for woodwork, one walls, then maybe the other in the columns/top of arches?

I have just ordered all the shades of French Grey and Portland Stone (pale, mid, normal and Dark) as well as clay (pale) and slaked lime sample pots.

So excited to try them out@
