Looking for warm, thick curtains

I want a thick curtain for our bay window in winter months. I'd like something long and heavy but can only find cotton curtains - what are those thick, draft excluder type curtains made of? Is it wool? Does anyone have one?

How about velvet, with a thicker lining.

If you can get curtains made up, then you could add thermal lining. I'd also recommend velvet or wool as the main fabric depending on the style of your property.

Blackout ones? Heavy and thick and come in all kinds of colours and materials and prices.

Interlined curtains are what you want and they are normally made to measure. Ive had them in vic torian and edwardian properties with single glazed windows. The last ones i had made were for a very wide bay window and cost about £500 from laura ashley in the sale. Ive had some for over 20 years.

As bilbodog says, interlined curtains are what you want; I have interlined curtains or blinds at every window - makes a big difference to our heating bills in winter months.

We have a cold area in our house. I have ikea velvet curtains with winter linings attached. They're incredibly good value and very long so you can use the excess material for a draught excluder. If that didn't work (for us its fine) I'd buy some cheap wadding and interline them.

I just got some thermal black out lined curtains from The Natural Curtain Company for our draughty bay. They are very thick and incredibly heavy.

Well made interlined, second hand curtains are available from curtain agencies, eBay and Gumtree type places. You could buy larger and alter if you really like a certain pair. Half the price of new IME. Bear in mind you will need a sturdy pole to bear the weight, most plastic tracks will struggle. Bay window pole kits (with adjustable curves/elbows and passing rings) are advertised fairly widely, you should find some.
