Please help me fancy up my floor!

We are rearranging our kitchen, meaning that we are exposing some areas which have not been tiled. It turns out that the tiles we have are pretty much unmatchable, so instead of getting tiles which won't quite match and annoy us, we thought we might go for a sort of 'feature' spot on the floor.

I can't decide whether this is a brilliant idea or will make the kitchen look like it was designed by a deranged toddler - does anyone have any ideas of what we could do with the floor? It's a space about 2m x 1m surrounded by beigish travertine tiles.

See, that looks cool, but this section is at the edge of the room which I suspect would make it look even more mental!
You have inspired me to get some samples and see what it would look like though, and if it turns out we are the style equivalent of deranged toddlers at least we'll be going into it with our eyes open!

Could you shift some around so that the spot moves into the middle, assuming you could take them up intact?

You can't shift around cos they will never come up. Op send me some pics and will see if I can find anything, but when patching you are better to do something different. But beige trav is common. (send me some pics wasn't an order lo but it's my job)
