WWYD with this awkward space?

I know it's all a bit white ATM, but what would you do with this awkward space under the stairs? Across from it is breakfast bar and kitchen (open plan) and tv stand as you can see is just along. It's just in between kitchen and living room and it's driving me nuts. I tried a dining table there but it looked daft tbh, maybe a book case? Any ideas.. Thanks

I'd go for a decent sized picture or canvas (or collection of various pictures, but that's trickier), and hang it to finish around one third up from the bottom of the window frame.

That way you keep the clean lines, but don't have quite as much of a visual gap.

The other option would be to add various plants along two-thirds of the gap - ferns, palms etc., of different ages, sizes and levels (so you'd need various heights of stool/planter as well as plant) which would fit in with the 'tropical botanicals' themes that are very in at the moment.

Is it a corner? I would put in some storage that hides the low ceiling - perhaps a desk in a cupboard if you need a little office space? Or cupboards with big open shelves at various points and lit.

Or if you have kids - a little reading corner (rug, reading lamp, shelf and bean bag)

Oo I love the plants idea, need more plants actually! And it's not a corner it slopes right down its underneath the stairs, a slope that you hit your head off when u go anywhere under that square boxy thing on ceiling (I'm horrid at descriptions) and omg yes a kids table and chairs maybe with a square of chalkboard paint for ds on the wall somewhere? Oh god it's harder to decide now iv asked haha!

Kids den with a curtain around it?

If you get enough plants, the children can 'hide' in them! Grin

Seriously though, you could actually have a plant 'wall', but add in a set of low shelving (e.g. one row of IKEA Kallax type height) where toys, bookts etc., can be stored, get the children's table/chairs, and then a few pots dotted around just past the seating breaking up the view so the mess isn't visible - you go green and save on tidying and bumped heads. The curtain den idea is what I first thought, but I thought it might look a bit messy for the living room? I also thought about them built in wardrobe company's to come and box it in to store toys and all my crap but can't visualise wether it would look ridiculous or not. I have no imagination or vision when it comes to things like this! Moonlight the plants and storage/ desk area is just genius its everything all in one I love it!

Why thank you! Although it was GardenBirds for the children's table, so can't claim all the credit!

You realise you'll have to come back with photo's though? It's part of the rules round here. Wink

Haha yes the kids table I had never even thought of, garden birds thank you! I was thinking the little table and chairs as garden suggested (seen a little set on ikea website that will be perfect) and your idea of adding the plants to hide the mess, genius!! And my ds loves hiding haha perfect I'm glad I asked before I dumped a book case in there. Toy storage and a little bean bag too if I can fit them in, can be my ds's little corner thank you everyone!
