Dado Panels Yay or nay

I am redoing my Victorian terrace and there is a dado rail throughout hall and landing. Does anyone use the dado panel wall paper these days? Worried they look a bit fussy? Also is it usual to have darker paint below dado rail?

I think it's really just down to personal taste. I'm not really a fan, but if I wanted to remove them, my chief considerations would be are they original? If so, I'd leave then alone. If you're not that keen on them, you can paint the whole wall in one colour to minimise the impact. (Use Google images to see examples of modern interiors with dado rails like this. It can look very elegant.) If they're not original, I would assess how straightforward it would be to remove them. If they look like they'd be tricky to remove, you might end up having to re-plaster the whole wall. Unless you're okay with that, again I'd leave well alone.

i have the wallpaper in the sitting room....I just painted it white, but am still "deciding" on a colour scheme for the whole house ...we've only been here 15 years.

It's similar to this

I think it can look really smart. Very much depends on the pattern you choose and the colours used.

If you want something modern but with a nod to antiquity you could use tin tile wallpaper - I've seen it look amazing on a New York loft

Ooh, I bloody love that tin tile wallpaper. Wish I had a house with dado rails now!

(I so don't)

I know! It's fabulous - I've had it on watch on my eBay list for over two years until I move somewhere with either dado rails or for a big wall where it can be a feature

Thanks. Yes the tin tile would look good in some places but I think I would want to try and clean it after a while 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Do you need special tradesmen to install textured type paper or is it fairly easy? Saw lincrusta had special type of adhesive etc

Lincrusta needs specialist hanging - there are lots of anaglypta and similar embossed papers which would be suitable instead. Cheaper and easier to put up.
