Wooden flooring vs floor tiles

We have just bought a house where the kitchen/dining areas are open plan. The area is currently carpeted. We have young children and the room leads to/from the garden so we don't think carpet is suitable for us in that part of the house. We can't decide between tiles or wooden flooring.
I was thinking about laying tiles in the kitchen bit and wood in the dining area. My oh thinks that it would spoil the 'one-room feeling' (sorry can't think of a better way of wording it!). What do people think would be better? Tia

go with one type of flooring. much easier to lay as well.
I prefer tiles in a kitchen, but there are many options suitable for 'wet' rooms.

It depends on your kitchen units I think. If white or pale wood then a dark chocolate oak real wood flooring can look stunning. If the units are darker or standard oak colour then tiles in a plain beige will look better. I agree about keeping it the same though.
Other option us something like Amtico esp if you're planning to stay and keep the the room as is for many years. It's an expensive option though but retains its good looks IMO.

The units are pale and I agree dark wood would look good.
I've never heard of Amtico! Will have a look.

We have Amtico/Karndean and had tiles in the past. So far the Amtico has been easier to care for and warmer underfoot. The tiles we had chipped when I dropped a pan lid on it.

Friends had amtico. It looked good and was hard wearing. We have tiles, stuff gets smashed. At least stuff has a chance with wood.

We have just had wood put down, we have a similar layout to you. I can't complain so far although I do get nervous when I drop things just incase I've dented the wood, but I guess you can chip tiles? Atleast with wood, after a few years you can sand and revarnish/wax/oil like new
Never had experience of new tiles though. We had old ones in our old house so I wasn't so precious about them. They were colder under foot though!

We have white tiles - they show all grime and we have black grout ishoos (was originally white )
In the lounge we have engineered wood flooring, I love it as it's much warmer under foot. I would do wood or if tiles have underfloor heating put in

We have Quickstep vinyl flooring - alate effect in the kitchen and dining room (open plan) and wood effect (chestnut) in the living room. We have underfloor heating under both and I'm really pleased with them.
