would you do half and half flooring?

We have an L shaped living/dining room.
We use the smaller side end as the dining room area and the bigger section for the sofa and television.

We're redoing to flooring soon because the last tenant kindly left a minging, stained white Capet down.

I want to do hard flooring in the dining section of the room and carpet in the living room bit. We have 4 children I don't want to carpet under the dining table to have the kids drop dinner all over it, especially with a BLW baby.
DP doesn't want hard flooring throughout because it will be cold and he worried DD will hurt herself when she's learning to walk etc.
He however thinks the 2 different types of floor in the same room would look odd.
It's all decorated the same and its quite minimalistic, very little furniture and not much stuff on display.
What do you think?

I think you're both right but half and half doesn't look great. Would he consider hard flooring with a huge, huge rug in the living room end?

We have carpet but we only use the dining table occasionally. If you eat at yours every day, carpet is a pain.

You mention the last tenant. If you are renting privately do speak to the landlord before you replace anything as you will need their permission.

To answer your question, the same flooring throughout usually looks better, but carpet deadens noise and is more comfortable in living rooms ime. I'd put some sort of hard flooring in the dining area though - it's the sensible option with four children.

We have a dining room that opens onto a conservatory (no doors), and have laminate in the conservatory and carpet in the main room. It looks great.

I would go for hard floor with a massive rug in the living room bit.
