We just got a new kitchen. No tiles! Instead, there is an easy wipe board thing (like a splash back) going all the way along the wall behind the worktop where you'd usually have tiles.
We chose the plain white as it went best with the rest of the kitchen, but there were some great ones including a clear one you can put your own prints behind.

I'm noting the uk, but think it's available pretty much anywhere they do kitchens. The man at the kitchen place we went to (we're in Germany) said it's very much the norm now. All the model kitchens in the showroom had it.

OP - the heat from cooking will not destroy the tiles. Splashes from cooking may discolour the grout between the tiles, that's all.

I have stainless steel panels or granite on my kitchen walls. Tiles can look dated quite soon in some kitchens.
