I can't answer your questions,but it looks like a 1930s fireplace in perfect condition. You might be able to get an architectural salvage place to remove it as they'll be able to sell it.

Doubt it would come out in one piece, it's not to everyone's taste, can't say I'm too keen.
Could you get it out yourself, then get it plastered, save you a bit.

It couldn't be less to my taste!! My mum passed away recently and we are moving into her house. Even she detested the fireplace and she was 75!! Lol. I've looked for salvage type places but there's only one "nearby" which is in Glasgow and not interested xx

In fact, are you replacing it with another fireplace, depending on the size, you could board it up, then put your new fireplace over it.

Not decided yet whether to get rid of fireplace altogether or put another one there. Removal quote is £100 so I'm happy with that I think lol x

It's not my cup of tea, I wouldn't remove it as it's an original feature. I would leave it alone and cover it up.

Oh, I agree that original doesnt mean it's nice but it does mean that an attempt should be made to save it for someone who loves it - in this case the salvage yard wasn't interested so all is good. I might have had a look on EBay to see if anyone is selling something similar and whether it was worth my while to try to flog it myself but I think my conscience would be clear!

I put my neighbour's beautiful 1930s leaded lights on Freecycle in order to save them when they had double glazing put in. (I did ask first!!).

The tiled ones don't seem to sell on ebay so you might get 99p! I would replace it with a nicer 1930s one like this

Thankfully my 30s semi is devoid of original fireplaces. Admittedly they have been replaced with different fugly fire surrounds but at least I can rip them out with no qualms when I find the right replacement!

There is But I think it is fairly small. I remember watching a house renovation programme where they tried to source one and they struggled. Probably because everyone has deemed them hideous and taken a sledgehammer to them!

That's the thing, some of the 1930's fireplaces are great but I honestly don't think this style is in though, in the future it'll probably be a different matter though, who knows, most things seem to come back eventually.

There's a place in Stockport that sells reclaimed and reproduction period fireplaces and they do sell that kind of thing.
