Foam or fibre filled sofa seat cushions??

I need some help please..

We have just been to sofa works and picked a new sofa however there is an option for either the standard fibre filled sofa cushions or we can pay a small amount more for foam filled cushions. The girls in the shop told us the fibre filled is a lot softer however each cushion would need plumping roughly once a week to ensure the filling doesn't become lumpy.

The fibre filled is supposedly alot firmer but is less upkeep, we sat on both types in the shop and to be honest there wasn't a huge difference.

I'd just like some advice from anyone with experience of either of these as the reason we are getting a new one is because our current sofa is so hard and uncomfortable...

If you have fibre filled has it sagged quickly and how often do you plump?

If you have foam filled how long did it take for the seats to soften slightly?

Thank you in advance!

Do not get cushions that need plumping
It is hard work and a pita plus they go flat anyway
I had a sofa that needed plumping
I hated it so much we ended IP burning it on the fire

feather filled here and it's a pita! especially now they're 14 years old. waiting for this one to die before we can justify getting a new one

on the other hand it is fabulously squishy when you need it most Smile

I'd go for foam - more support and your seat cushions won't be a squished mess.

Ours has a mixture of both. Is that an option for you?

Go for foam, it retains its shape much better - I have to plump my fibre filled ones daily to make them look good, and they're really heavy its like a workout. The flatten and they covers go wrinkly- foam doesnt do that.
Fibre is very comfy and squishy but looks a mess if not turned, bashed and plumped up daily and who has the time to do that???

Ours are foam wrapped in fibre. The best of both worlds.

I've got foam which has a soft cushion cover on top. would this be an option?
foam is definitely better for keeping shape.

We did ask about the mix of both as we would without a doubt go for this but unfortunately the style we have picked does not have it as an option.

Thanks for all your replies, I think we're leaning towards the foam as we will be paying for them over 4 years and I couldn't stand it if 2 years down the line we regretted the decision of the fibre and they were starting to look really worn and flat!

I had a sofa from dfs with foam cushions and after 6 years the cushions we're still exactly the same as when we ought them, no dipping or sagging at all. My friend had a bad back and she loved sitting on it.

I now have foam wrapped in fibre but prefer the old foam.

Don't get fibre. I have a m&s sofa that needs fluffing every day. I hate it. It started off just once a month but slowly increased & after 2 years I was fluffing most days & now it's everyday. It looks terrible & I hate my sofa & the awful collapsed cushions.

I live alone and bought 2 settees from Harvey's, Nottingham, May 2014
I paid a premium for best quality and they are so sag happy it will ensure I'll never buy fibre filled cushions again. On complaint I paid £45 to a bodge artist from Servico who told me where I always sat, plumped up the cushions, photographed them, and disappeared in circa 15 minutes. Within 2 hours the cushions had reverted to sag state. My complaint was dismissed. No more Harvey's or Servico for me. Walt Reid

My 1st sofa was foam and the structure of the seat cushions was as good nearly 20 years later when we got it (unlike the frame and fabric which were worn out).
My current sofa is fibre, I would have had foam but it wasn't an option. It's about 7+ years old and for the last 3+ years I've been meaning to do something about having the seat cushions refilled with foam. The back cushions are fine. A couple of months ago I fitted old pillows into each seat cushion - 2 pillows just fitted side by side - and that has improved the look and feel of them, but I still think they need refilling.

FOAM. I've just had my feather/fibre seat cushions re-done with foam.
They were lovely and squishy and comfy to start with and were flat as pancakes after a couple of years.

Who did you use KnittedFrog and are you pleased with them?

squirrels, I just used a local foam shop. Literally all they do is foam!
You wouldn't believe the different grades of foam out there! They did an excellent job. It's not just a wedge of foam, they wrapped it like a proper upholstered cushion would be. I'm in Suffolk.

KnittedFrog can I also ask how much you paid for your new foam cushions? I fell for their marketing bullshit bought a sofa from Loaf with feather cushions which go flat within an hour of sitting on them, total PITA. To top it off I broke my arm a few weeks ago and now cannot lift the bloody seat cushions let alone plump them!

Luxe, I sat on different foam to see which grade I wanted. I went for a middle grade. My cushions are quite big. Will try to attach a pic. Now all I do is turn them over once a week. They're fab. I paid £540. Before the foam they were about a third of the plumpness they are now!

I've just had my tetrad feather cushions replaced with foam - cost £200 ish quid including delivery. I sent the cushions to them as I didn't trust myself to measure.

Plumping is so annoying, it got to the point that the sofa looked shit every time someone sat on it.

Your sofa looks soo comfy Frog. Why oh why did I go for feather?! Right I'm going to investigate local furniture upholsterers, will definitely do a seat foam test too Wink. Thank you.

Thanks, bit far then. It's on my to do list, but it's a bloody long list! If I had a local recommendation it might have bumped it up the list Smile
