Have you recently traveled with little kids?

Hi! I'm travelling to the USA to visit family for the first time in 2 years next week. My DD is 3 and will be required to wear a mask. We've been practising but it's not going great. I'm travelling Icelandair.

Has anyone had any experience travelling internationally recently? How strict are airlines being with really little kids? Specifically Icelandair.

I'll also have my 1yo DS to deal with so I'm getting stressed as I'll be travelling on my own with them.

Advice? Experience?

No advice but really shocked 3 ye olds are being asked to wear masks as not normal here at all even on flights.

Yes it's ridiculous isn't it. All children 2 and over just wear masks in flights to the USA

We've just travelled from the U.K. to the US. Everyone over 2 definitely needs a mask and they do enforce it quite strictly. You can get there just keep practicing. Since the start most preschoolers have been wearing masks in school/nursery in the US. Our 3 year old wore his last summer age 2 and is wearing it again this year.

Thank you. I'll keep working on it! I was hoping they might be more relaxed with toddlers!

Op I just traveled to the US on Icelandair with my young son. Everyone was super kind and totally understood the challenges. So long as it is clear you are trying it will be fine.

Whereabouts in the states are you going? My experience is totally different to the poster above. The airport is literally the only place since getting here where I have seen anyone in a mask.

Get a silicon mask guard to put under it. It holds the mask off their face

Thanks all. I have a layover in Iceland and then am flying into Detroit

I just recently flew Icelandair with my kids from London to Keflavík and they didn't even suggest that my children should wear masks (aged 6 and 3) and I would have been extremely surprised if they had. In Iceland the cut off was 15 (and very briefly 11) and there is no general support in Iceland for masks on children so I would guess the Icelandic flight staff will be sympathetic as it's very unlikely they will agree with it.

Is it decided by the US that flights in have this requirement? I thought that kind of thing was determined by the airlines? You certainly won't have to put masks on them when flying the first leg at least.

Yes so it's the US that has the rule. I think they won't have to wear it from UK to Iceland but will from Iceland to USA. I'm just hoping they'll be a bit relaxed with it as it is ridiculous and she's already had a negative PCR test

It's really not ridiculous...this is how the U.K. has absolutely sky rocketing numbers. You realize the pcr isn't fool proof? Have you completely isolated all of you since she was swabbed? Then you don't know she's negative. What's ridiculous is thinking like this that has created the highest case numbers in the western world. It's a disgrace. Put the damn mask on!

Oi pig. Take a breath! Rant over? My god. Should I slap a mask on my 13 month old as well? Nearly every other country (with much lower covid rates than the UK) don't require under 11s to wear a mask. I'd guess it's more the packed pubs, football stadiums, full schools and general dropping of all restrictions at once than the odd 3 year old on an airplane but could be wrong 🥱🥱
