Holidays

Mauritius over Christmas

Hi there! Looking for recommendations for a Christmas holiday. Want to go somewhere warm and would like to splash our last cash before we have to start paying separate tickets for our daughter.
Dh and I are thinking of going to Mauritius for 12 days over Christmas. Somewhere kid friendly! Does anyone have any recommendations and what is a "good" price.
Is it really worth it?

We stayed at the St Regis which is to hell and gone at the far end of the island - the Le Morne peninsula. It was heaven on earth and there was a bit to do. We hired a car and went to Port Louis for the day which was nice. I'm not sure it was perfect for kids though. If I were you I'd probably opt for somewhere further up the coast.
As to what's a good price - I'd have thought Christmas peak season and unlikely to be a 'bargain' time to go!
It is a lovely place and we felt very safe there - locals are really friendly and paddling in the crystal water with tropical fish at the ankles is a real life-enhancing experience!

Following because we were thinking of Mauritius at Christmas until travel agent said it might be very wet.

I’ve googled but got conflicting advice!

We went just before Christmas 18months ago, it rained once over night or maybe twice. Stayed at Shandrani Beachcomber which is 5 minutes from airport, good kids club

Christmas definitely isn't the cheapest time but I can't think of anywhere else with such warm temperatures and a small time difference in December. It's the only time we can get two weeks off as a family.
When you went did you call inclusive or is it better to go just breakfast?

We went all inclusive, which was great as we saw how much the wine was 😂

My FIL is Mauritian and we visit quite regularly.
Christmas is the best time to go, but it can be very hot. It would be unusual for there to be a lot of rain.

I like Flic en Flac on the west coast or Grand Baie in the North of the island. The weather is better in the north most of the time.

@ThatClaireIsARightPain I don’t know why the travel agent told you that, Christmas is their summer time - it’s in the Southern Hemisphere. We went in August for our honeymoon when it was their winter - a few showers and breezy by the sea front - it was still great. I reckon Christmas is an even better time to be there, because the beaches and sea will be warmer. Go! Smile

OP we did Christmas in Gran Canaria one year - not as nice as Mauritius but good value and nice weather - obviously not quite as hot as in summer. I think Christmas is prime season in Mauritius so it may be expensive.

I sooo badly want to go but the prices I have seen so far are 4-5k all-in and it makes me a bit uneasy to blow all that on a holiday (we will need new windows soon). But then it will be the last chance we can go on such a long haul trip since after January we will need to buy our daughter a seat. I think if we don't find anything cheaper though it will be Gran Canaria or Tenerife!!

South Florida is hot at that time usually and you can get good flights and cheaper accommodation.

We looked at mauritius/maldives/seychelles for christmas this year
6 adults though and need a very quiet secluded hotel as dsd has been very ill and we all need to recover somewhat.

best i could get came in at 18K

while we could do it, it just seems outrageous amount of money even given the hellish yr we are all having

so we are off to caribbean , instead, probably barbados , flights and very luxy private villa with direct access to beach and a pool is costing total of £10500

I saw lots of great hotels but dsd cannot cope with being around lots of people , hence need for private villa

We are currently in Mauritius at the Dinarobin Beachcomber in Le Morne. It is a lovely hotel and fabulous setting although quite remote (we have hired a car). We’re staying half board which includes all water sports.

We have been to Mauritius a few times with kids over Christmas as I have family there. Last time did one week out of three in a hotel. It was the Ravenela Attitude in Balaclava. It doesn’t have the pure white beaches and 6* Luxury that some places have (as it’s near the estuary) but it’s a great resort for kids and more affordable than some. Mine enjoyed kids club and traditional Mauritian dance shows.
The restaurants were great and the Christmas Eve gala dinner was fabulous. There’s a fair amount to do if you want to get out and about. We spent New Year’s Eve on flic en flac beach with family.

Can I ask which travel companies people recommend for Mauritius at this time of year?
