WE stayed here a couple of years ago - fabulous location, walkable to everywhere, near Union station for great eating and pick up tourist buses, and added benefit of nightly happy hour thrown in!

I would have a look on bookings now and see if you can lock into a hotel that offers free breakfast/ridge/microwave/sink with the option to "PAYER LATER". Do not pay up front, you will not get your money back if you have to cancel.
Check the map to see how far the hotel is from the attractions.
DC is expensive for food/metro/hotel.

The metro card costs $2 and comes with $8 in stored fare value for a total price of $10.
The metro is per ride/distance. It's a lot more expensive than NY. IF you travel before 9:30 a.m. and between 3:00 p.m - 7:00 p.m., there is a peak fare. Other times and weekends its off peak.
From metro to bus and vice versa there is what is called a transfer.

The museums are all free, except the private ones.
You will need tickets to visit the Capitol - do a search online and type in visit to US capitol , instructions are there.
The Library of Congress with right across the street from the Capitol is definitely worth a visit. They also do tours, do a search for that.
You will also be able to visit the Supreme Court in the same area as the Capitol/Library of Congress.
All the museums are on the Mall and within walking distance.
You will need tickets to visit the new African American Museum. Tickets are issued three months in advance. I believe the next tickets will be for September either on 5 or 6 June. Do a search on African American Museum and it will ell you how to go about obtaining tickets.
Or you could take a chance on the day and walk up between 11:00 and 1:00 p.m. (I think) and they will let you in
It's worth doing the hop on hop off bus even for one day.

You must visit the:
The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a prominent Roman Catholic basilica and national shrine located in Washington, D.C.,
Address: 400 Michigan Ave NE, Washington, DC 20017
Beautiful place. The metro or Bus #80 will take you right across the street.
They do tours and you can even attend service.

The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the City and Diocese of Washington, commonly known as Washington National Cathedral, is a cathedral of the Episcopal Church located in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States.
Address: 3101 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016
This is equivalent to the Anglian Church. Also beautiful and they also English tea on the premises - think you have to book up.
Buses #32, 34, 36 will drop you off right outside. Also the hop in hop off will take you there.
Mount Vernon: George Washington's estate: you can take travel by boat on the Potomac or my train - do a search.
Washington is a beautiful like the rest of America, but one can always tell tourists. Be very aware of your surroundings and pay attention.
It's a very safe city, but I find when people go on vacation they left their guards down too much.
Lastly, when you visit the museums/The Capitol/Library of Congress etc, its like going to TSA security and maybe even worse.
Take as little with you as possible and most definitely no food and water.
Enjoy.

A lot of DC hotels are quite dull and corporate. I used to have to go for work so have tried a few. I like the Sofitel. Some colleagues prefer the Monaco. It's more quirky but can be really noisy as it's opposite the Verizon Center. The Willard is the grande dame. I find it a bit stuffy but the brunch is good.

I love DC. Enjoy your trip!

Frequent D.C. visitor here; DH interned there so we know the city really well. When we stay in a hotel and not with friends we always stay in Georgetown to avoid that corporate vibe. You can wander out of your hotel and there are so many nice shops, restaurants and charming architecture. The Four Seasons and the Rosewood are lovely if you’ve got deep pockets, otherwise the The Graham is an amazing boutique hotel, not too expensive, swanky rooms and has a really lively rooftop bar.

I’ve literally done nothing on majorie25’s list though which is pretty terrible! Time for another visit perhaps?!

We stayed in Georgetown suites. If you have the money troubledlichen 's offerings will be nicer but we had a couple of bedrooms and a little kitchen in a great location for a good price.

Have stayed at the Embassy Suites near Georgetown and its been a nice location to stay in. No corporate vibe there.

Buying one of the metro's SmarTrip cards in a metro station can be done but you need to bear in mind that the machine will not accept UK credit cards as payment (this is because the machine asks for a US five digit zipcode). You will need to make all such payments via the machine in cash.

Smithsonian Museums on the Mall are free to enter and security consists of metal detectors and bag searches which are all very much standard these days. Security searches are far more detailed when entering the Capitol Building so takes up more time. If you do visit the Capitol building book your tickets online and well in advance. The restaurant there is also very good in terms of menu and welcomes visitors, not just those who work there. The Newseum is also well worth a visit (you start at the top and work your way down)

A good place for shopping is Tysons Corner and is readily accessible via the Silver Line on the Metro. Another mall that is a bit nearer is the Fashion Center at Pentagon City.

Before you book those hotels, check out either bookings.com or one o those other sites.
Se what the rates are and then compare then to what the hotel will offer you.
As I said do not pay your money upfront, choose the "pay later" option, not sure if you book directly with the hotel, that option is available.
I always have a hotel with kitchen facilities, it makes life so much easier. Say you are hungry in the night, you already ave leftovers in the fridge waiting to be warmed up.
You can buy the Metro card are Metro stations from their kiosk.
Bring suitable walking shoes, DC is a walking city and you see a lot more that way.
If you are into seafood, you can take the train to Baltimore inner harbor for the day. (be very careful in Baltimore though)

The National Aquarium is a non-profit public aquarium located at 501 East Pratt Street on Pier 3 in the Inner Harbor area of downtown Baltimore, Maryland in the United States.
See sharks, dolphins, alligators, turtles, frogs and more.
