An anglo saxon landowner - beginning with f (we think) 7 letters. I have been on internet for some time - no clue. Thanks.

MrsCakesPrecognition Sun 14-Dec-14 17:23:49

Could it be folcfry?

OhMyActualDays Sun 14-Dec-14 17:24:36

Freeman?

lostinspace2014 Sun 14-Dec-14 17:25:29

may have e as 4th letter too.

lostinspace2014 Sun 14-Dec-14 17:26:38

ok freeman looks good - could only freemen own land then?

OhBuggeringBollocks Sun 14-Dec-14 17:28:14

Fiefdom? I know that's a part of land not an owner

Feoffee is an owner of a fiefdom? Would that fit?

OhBuggeringBollocks Sun 14-Dec-14 17:28:58

A freeman would not have been under a feudal overlord - so no landlord effectively

MrsCakesPrecognition Sun 14-Dec-14 17:30:38

folcfry = freeman.

Pantah630 Sun 14-Dec-14 18:26:11

folkland

if it is folcfry it gives problems for the clue which is mythical anglo saxon monster which I thought was grendell - anyone know any other monsters?

OhBuggeringBollocks Sun 14-Dec-14 18:52:18

It's Grendel if that makes any difference? (Only one L)

lostinspace2014 Sun 14-Dec-14 19:20:40

thanks - my mistake - that is what we had (weeps in corner what chance has my child got with me as the homework supervisor grin)

YonicSleighdriver Sun 14-Dec-14 19:22:38

The homework is a crosswird?

lostinspace2014 Sun 14-Dec-14 19:44:14

yes - but a historical one - as a histry graduate I am alarmed that I find it too difficult grin

YonicSleighdriver Sun 14-Dec-14 20:03:40

Crosswords were invented in 1913, so subject and format don't match

fgrin

lostinspace2014 Sun 14-Dec-14 20:11:16

so was the spelling of histry!!!! smile
