Retraining and looking at what I can do with my degree, does anyone know about speech therapy training?

used2bthin · 12/09/2009 21:45

I've got a (bsc)degree in early childhood studies and education. I was looking into doing EYPS but realised i don't think I want to go back to nursery type work. I'd like to be working with families or one to one with children. Speech therapy has always interested me and I have often wished I did that instead of my degree.

The other thing I was looking inot was educational psychology.

I would like to do something very part time for now, whether that was working towards an access course (I believe it is sometimes possible to do an access course before training as an EP instead of a full psychology degree. Is the same true of speech therapy? I ould also look for work as a speech therapy assisitant maybe in the mean time? Or any training on the job routes?

I looked on a great website called prospects but am still a bit confused.

I'm a SALT.
It's a great job.
I absolutely love it.

The course is hard work. You could do the 2 year PG conversion course.
The SALT asst. idea will give you a good feel for it.I'll link you to RCSLT site which will give you more info.

Thank you I will get in touch with them, maybe they will tell me whether my degree is valid for the two year conversion. Or is that for anyone with a degree? I would need to do it part time if I did it now or maybe wait until DD is full time at school and try and get some experience till then.

I really think I would enjoy it but am a bit scared as its been a while since I've done paid work.

Can I ask a few questions too please?

Where does the pay scale sit in comparison to a teacher or nurse, is there a lot of scope for part time work and is there much demand for newly qualified Salts?

Sorry for hijack

used2bthin · 13/09/2009 20:38

Hijak away I am interested in finding out too. I just looked up courses and the closest one is 40mins away, I will have to make calls to see if my placements could be closer to home because of getting to DD in an emergency (medical needs). Or if there are distance ways of doing some of the work. I really hope so!

Starting as an asst. would be a lovely and non scary way in. A few of hours work very flexible hurs as do most of the SALTs. As it is a job where supply exceeds demand, it is quite easy to negotiate flexible terms.

Pay obviously depends on what you do and at what level but better paid than nursing or teaching. I'm a senior specialist so am happy with what I get.

Therei s demand for SALTs all over the world but a lot of posts in UK frozen at present due to lack of £££ to pay them in Health Trusts.

Nevertheless this is one of the few professions in which you never need be out of work.

It sounds great, I am definately going to find out more. I think the training may be an issue for me as I can't really be that distance from DD every day, I'd have to arrange for someone else to be available for her just in case (when she's at school I mean) but couldn't do it every day. I am going to make some calls tomorrow though I think and find out if there is any way it could work.

Moondog in terms of training was it mostly practice based?

It does sound really interesting.
How did you find out where the nearest course to you was? Is there a website that shows all the colleges that provide the course?

Report
used2bthin · 13/09/2009 21:35

I have just looked more and it seems the only course which is offered part time is in Birmingham which is too far and also they only do the full pathway so it would take me six years. I was hoping for four part time or a way of working towrads it slowly but I can see why it would be hard to do distance learnig for it.

The nearest place does the right course but only full time. Still I will make a few calls and look inot whether there are routes to train whislt working as an assistant, that kind of thing, then it could take as long as it had to iyswim.

It's a great idea, Used2bthin.

Go for it.

I did a 4yr full time course and at that time the only other option was the 2 year post-grad.

I don't know whether there are other ways of doing it now. It is pretty intensive and most of it was classrom based with weekly placements and then placements that were blocks of a few weeks.

Once you are qualified, it is a great job if you have children as in some areas of work there is the option for term time only or part-time work.

I always understood that ed psychs were teachers and psychologists. I also think they got paid more than we did

Hi Desperatehousewife, I think a new route for EPs was brought in and now there is a pathway to validate a degree sort of an access course type thing. Then three years full time. I have a lot of experience working wit children but less of it is school age so I think it'd be too much for me anyway and not necessarily what I wanted to do.

Thanks scottishmummy that is great, I think I would possibly be accepted for an accelerated course but they are all fll time and as I did six months of a pgce before having DD I would worry about the intensity of that sort of course full time and with a DD with medical issues etc.

Occupational therapy is a good idea too actually I hadn't thought of it which is silly because my mum is an OT! I know she wanted to work with children though but was worried as it was so competitive. I would defiantely want to work with children.

I wonder if there is any way into these professions that is flexible enough for me to do whilt caring for DD. I am a single parent too btw to add to the issues!

you need either a psychology degree or a post grad conversion in psychology to be EP.

I think most courses leading to a vocational career would be very difficult to do on a part-time/distance learning type basis. Which is probably why it is not really possible to do so.

Although I'd be very happy for someone to correct me on this.

Are there any websites other than OU for distance learning which might give you some more ideas?

SLT/OT assistant would be a good stopgap and also be good for your cv to help get you on a course if that becomes possible once dd is at school.

Thanks I am not sure if I would even be accepted for that, my degree covered a couple of child psychology modules but thats about it. It looks like the OU does a conversion course though so it would at least be a career I could make a start with now if it did accept me. But obviously I would have to make sure I could do the job anyway.

When I started the pgce I kept thinking I should have looked into other options like speech therapy more. Wish I had now and terrified of starting something I can't finis again.

Yes, it's important to choose a course that you can complete - taking into account your responsibilties at home.

So, I guess, it's a case of being realistic about the time you can devote to it as well as finding something you want to do.

How about starting a thread asking for ideas on careers with children which offer part time/extended training and flexible hours once you are qualified?

Sorry desperatehousewife I hadn't seen your posts when I said about the psychology. I got half way through a primary teaching pgce when pg with DD but had to stop as wasn't realy ell enough to finish it. I could have gone back last year or one before and completed the last six months of it but now would have to start again and I'm not sure that I want to do it enough yswim and it was hard enough when I was sure. Hmm yes I may need to rethink. I defintely want to start working towards soemthing that will give me a career I enjoy and can use my degree with. I probabky want to start no sooner than january or April though so a bit of time to think. I just hate not having a plan!
