@bendmeoverbackwards has she heard back from her other two choices? No decisions needs to be made yet. I can't believe your DD didn't get an offer from Durham 😔

Thanks chopc, sorry for inadvertently filling up the last thread.

bend, Flowers for you and your daughter.

bend - I just saw your news before the other thread ended. I’m so sorry. I actually feel livid on your behalf. To keep your DD waiting all this time for that is terrible. Yes, this probably happens every year, but it’s still really poor form, in my view. With her grades she should have had choices, as you say. They all claim to be all woke about mental health in young people - well bollocks to that, frankly.

I'm so sorry @bend - that's unbelievably shit news. I had hoped so much that she would get an offer... I imagine it's way too early for her to feel at all positive about her other options but the history department is meant to be amazing at Exeter if she does decide to go for it. I'm so sorry though. It's so unkind - I hope she understands that normally she would have had offers with her stats x

I'm so sorry to hear your news Bend. It was so cruel to make her wait so long for that outcome. GRRRRRRR!

@bendmeoverbackwards

I'm on an emotional knife edge at the moment anyway so I've welled up at your unhappy news.

Once your DD's tears are over, and a re-evaluation of the way forward undertaken hopefully Exeter will appeal. She also had 2 other offers, no ?

My DD is on the verge of no offers at all, just one Uni to deliver the realistically anticipated final blow now, and then I suspect there will be tears so I totally understand your possibly helpless/angry frustration at being unable to do anything to actively help your DD at this point in time.

Thank you all for your kind words.

Goodness knows how we'll get through this evening. Dd is sobbing, upset and angry. She's exhausted with the whole process which is now 6 months long. She now seems to have gone off Exeter but I don't know if that's because the Durham news is still raw. I wish I'd warned her a bit more about getting too invested in Durham.

She could consider a gap year and re-applying. But things aren't great at home, dd is suffering from friction with her 14 year old autistic sister and I was hoping a bit of space would do them both good. Don't think dd can face another year at home but she also isn't happy with her options.

I just don't know Sad

And she thinks she's a failure. Goodness knows what this will do to her mental health.

And one of her friends at school has been taking the piss over Exeter, saying it's posh and saying it in a silly way. Now dd can only hear that.

@SATSmadness I'm so sorry for your dd too, it's Medicine right?

It's just so shit for them.

Her other offers beside Exeter are Manchester and Liverpool both of which she has gone off. If she was applying now, she would not have chosen them. And would probably have gone with straight History rather than Ancient and Modern.

80% success and 10% rejections and 10% still waiting. We have had Oxbridge offer holders amongst the nos though.

The Durham website now specifically states they do not want a separate PS unless you are applying for a different course to the one your PS covers.

Comparing a CCC offer from the olden days to today's admissions process is pointless. It is a different beast. Onky 17% went to uni then rather than 50% now.

Sorry to hear your news Bend but for ancient and modern I think Exeter has just as much to offer course wise.

I would warn against reapplying next year as the birth rate will rise. There may well be a whole host of disgruntled people not getting their preferred offers this year and thus further increasing applications again and possibly ending up in the same situation.

I wouldn't be surprised though now the 2020 and 2021 grades will show a plethora of A* grades (set to be higher this year again) to see both gcses change to a 10 -1 grade system as well as A levels.

It may well be worth checking with admissions at her other offers whether she can switch to History @bendmeoverbackwards

Sorry my above post was cut short. It started saying that we have not seen an overall downturn in Durham offers just A couple of strange nos.

And those rates were from around 95 D applications. I am.unsure what happened to my first paragraph at all.

quest1on · 23/03/2021 18:57

Oh god SATS, this is ridiculous. I’m not surprised you’re on a knife edge.

DS has had two exams today which are essentially the first part of his ‘A-levels.’ I just wanted him to get through those without sone dagger dropping from LSE right before an exam! All this is happening while they’re doing their actual exams fgs.

Report
bendmeoverbackwards · 23/03/2021 18:57

Bit confused @SeasonFinale are you saying 80% of Durham applicants got offers? Seems very high.

Oh bend so so sorry to see your news. So unexpected and like pp I am also welling up for your poor DD. Would a visit to Exeter potentially help once we're allowed, or has she already been? Un-mumsnetty hugs to you both.

@chopc thank you for the new thread and the tag 😊

If it’s scant consolation @bendmeoverbackwards , dd’s two best friends are off to Exeter and they are no slackers Smile

Ds’s friend graduated this past year and is at a top investment bank.

bend - might it be possible to visit Exeter over Easter? Has she been yet? Sorry, I can’t remember if you said what part of the country you’re in.

Thank you all for your lovely supportive messages.

Personally I think dd should accept Exeter. It’s a great university, dd really liked it when she went to the virtual open day a few weeks ago.

I asked her recently which course she prefers between Exeter and Durham and she said she likes both for different reasons.

bendmeoverbackwards · 23/03/2021 19:04

@quest1on we’re in London and I will suggest to dd that we visit Exeter when allowed.
