Just looking for advice and ideas. Daughters 12 month sandwich placement has just been cancelled due to Coronavirus. She is searching for another but in the current climate it is difficult. So option to return to a limited uni final year or find something constructive to do.....but what. Ideas and advice appreciated.

Has she talked to her uni about this? I would be surprised if she can just go off and do anything for the year (effectively have a gap year). Otherwise it might be viewed as interrupting her studies. And then there are the student loan issues.

I would think she either needs to find an alternative placement (not easy) or return to her final year.

I think this is one of the hardest situations in the crisis. My Ds is thinking of doing a placement year in 21/22 but I wouldn’t be surprised if that won’t be possible.

Surely her university should be offering advice and alternatives in this situation? What have they said?

The university should offer advice but they don’t have access to more placements. Students often find their own anyway. So I think the only option would be to ask for their advice and possibly accept she has to miss the year and go back to university.

She found out on monday and as they are working from home are only available via e-mail. So far no response. She believes you are able to suspend your studies and then finish your degree. I agree they need to discuss options but are not easy to contact at this late stage. It is a sandwich course so not expected to be there next year

She should contact her placement coordinator/advisor.

Some of the criteria has changed at some unis. Where you needed minimum 30 weeks before it has been dropped to 15 where I work. She still has plenty of time to find a placement, she could start as late as February and get the weeks in. Although she will be interrupted until she starts her placement if it is after September (well this is what happens where I am).

Get her to apply for any and everything. A lot of places are still taking placement students on.
