Interesting. I posted a similar query yesterday which I've had no response to.

When their online exams are over, my daughter and her housemates are keen to go back to their rented house (they all left before lockdown to return to their parents). We will have to go back at some point before the lease ends in the middle of August, to bring her belongings home, but we could do that as a day trip. Ideally she'd like to stay there for a while and, so far, I've been reserving judgement.

She also wants to move into her new student house as soon as the new lease starts in September.

Following too with interest. One DD will be in a private house, other in Uni owned house - so 2 potentially different scenarios. My hunch is that there may be a regional take on this - news full of low infection rate now in London/ SE, whereas much higher in other areas. Interesting next few weeks!

I think there might be a regional thing too. My daughter is at Exeter and those living in Devon and Cornwall do seem to be being very protective of that area. I understand that, but students aren't like normal second home owners so I hope they would be welcomed back.

My two are both resigned to the fact that they will be home now for the summer, but are chomping at the bit to get into their new places in September regardless of wether lectures are online or physical.

My dds say they are moving into their student house even if their lectures are online. I don’t see why not given they are locked into a rental contract from the end of June.

My son has been told by his Rental agency that they must pay full rent from the 1 July whether they are allowed to return or not - his University has not yet confirmed whether lectures will be online or physical from September ....Anyone else in this situation? The university owned accommodation is giving refunds but this will be a private rent from July...or whenever they are allowed back...

Babbaloo1- yes my DS is in the same position. He has spoken to the agency and been told the house will be available, he must pay if he moves in it not. DS is not even sure if uni will be able to run his course next year, there are a lot of practical elements.

Private rentals are not contingent on Uni courses being available etc. Landlords are entitled to insist on contracts already signed being honoured. The biggest potential issue I feel is if some housemates drop out or decide not to return and their share of the rent falls on the remaining sharers (or more likely their guarantors).

It’s also important they realise that once they firm their new “household” for CV purposes they must stay as a household group and comply with whatever rules there may be about households interacting with others. They won’t be able to come and go from home as they might have done in normal times. And if one gets ill they will all have to isolate together for 14 days

I'll be paying rent for two university rooms from 1 July. My question I'm about to put to the managing agents is when do the current tenants move out, what provision for cleaning is to be made and when do my two sons and their friends get to take over the house once it's been cleaned.
