Having second thoughts about degree

Hi all, first post on here so apologies if it's a bit random! In June last year, I left a pretty successful career in IT with the plan to retrain as a paramedic.

I'm currently midway through an access to HE course at college and have recently applied to university. BUT I am also part way through an induction to work with a well known end of life charity as a Community hca and I'm finding myself feeling very drawn to nursing with a focus on community/palliative care.

I was so, so certain that I wanted to be a paramedic and I feel a bit trapped by my initial decision now as I'm concerned that the uni will deem it a bit flakey to have this change of heart at this stage. I also have two young children (2 and 4) and the practical side of me is saying that nursing would be a wiser option in terms of the funding, jobs and placements available closer to home.

Has anybody been in a similar situation before and managed to change courses at the application stage?

I’ve not been in your shoes before, personally I’d contact the admissions department at the Uni you have applied for and have a chat with them.

I don't think the university will consider it flaky at all, given that you've become interested in the new area because of your work experience. And they're both health care, so it's not a bewildering leap.

Can't advise as to which is the better career - sounds like both would be dependent on your being able to have round-the-clock childcare as needed.
