Previous thread and hope you don't mind that I set up the next thread @juicy0. Just did it to ensure that we carry on chatting seamlessly Wink

Didn't want to step on your toes @juicy0 but wasn't sure how soon you'd be around.

Hello ALL- thanks for the next thread

DD messaged me that she bought oranges and day nurse and is officially an adult. (she also bought pop tarts so not terribly grown up)

She has also made the decision to skip 80's night-which she was really looking forward to as it will be belting out ABBA tunes which she loves but wants to get better and not push it. Just realised there is no "proud" smiley face i guess would go over like a lead balloon on the wider mumsnet but would probably be fine here

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 my ds doesn't like football either. Ds2 is football mad and always complains at his dad and brothers not liking football. I hope he finds a fellow fan.

I'm not going to contact ds for the time being. He doesn't really answer my questions so I thought I'd just keep quiet.

Just checking in to new thread, thank you for setting it up.
Nothing to report after talking to DS yesterday I’ll have to wait at least 3 or 4 days before I contact him again or he will think I’m being too needy!
Thankfully I’ll be working so won’t have time to worry about him (I’ll put my backpack in the cupboard for a while) Wink

DS doesn’t like football (or much sport unfortunately) but if there are any gamers, or military history buffs out there, then he’s the boy to go to!

DS has just told me he's only spent £50 since he started - clearly living the high life not. I've told me he doesn't quite have to live like a monk!

Hi all...just checking into the new thread, can’t believe we made it this far!
My DD is enjoying herself and the course so couldn’t ask for more at this stage. She had the start of freshers flu last week but we wasn’t sure if it was a bad hangover. She drank plenty of water and had a berocca that I insisted she took with her and that seemed to do the trick.
I’m not sure if her diet is that great...she wasn’t sure until recently how to get the hob going. I said as long as you eat some fruit or vegetables everyday you won’t get scurvy. She has made a lovely friend in her flat, but most of her new friends are from surrounding flats that have all joined up.
Her flat mates seem lovely she said but very quiet, so no eating round the table together, which I think is a shame but then everyone’s different.
Still checking the SU Facebook page for new photos and nothing to report yet.

Wow, over 1000 posts 😀. I've not seen any photos of DS on the SU feeds yet, despite him going to everything as far as I can tell. He's not sent me any either. From the little I can gather from him his flat seem to stick together and have become the place for pres in the block, so I worry about his alcohol consumption too.

Hi everyone, we may be going to UEA on Sunday as both DS's have asked if we can bring their bikes up. It would be lovely to go for a lovely Sunday lunch together if anyone can recommend anywhere nearish with parking?
However, we will not be messing about with bikes, cycle racks and journeys if it doesn't stop pissing down Grin

@sluj The Eagle on Newmarket Road in Norwich and The Earlham Arms both do a nice roast and I've also heard The Red Lion at Eaton is nice but I haven't been there myself.

I never imagined we'd get to 1000 posts when I set up the original thread! Thanks to you all for your contributions and support.
DD has just found out that her subject doesn't have a reading week this month so she'll most likely be the only one in her flat whilst everyone else returns home. She still has a normal timetable but as we are local I'm hoping to persuade her to visit overnight once or twice to break up the week.

Goodness beyond 1000 posts already! Way to go UEA mums Glitterball, the Oxbridge lot need two universities to keep their threads going Grin

More prosaically DS2 has visited - and used - the launderette.

Interesting that some degrees have reading weeks and others don't @juicy0. Why wouldn't the geographers, I wonder...? When is that week? End of October or sooner?

Yay to 1000 posts and beating the Oxbridge lot!!!!

DS was eating a salad when we skyped him. I have told him he doesn't need to be quite so frugal with his money. He hasn't done any washing yet. Knowing him he will wait until he has no clean clothes left. He said the gym is very busy so not sure if he's going to join it which is a pity.

How would we know if there is a reading week - would the timetable be empty that week?

NotSorry · 01/10/2019 20:45

@boys3 DS said he was going to the laundrette today but didn't know how/where to get the card - can you help?

I couldn't resist writing the 1000th post on the other thread. Immature...I know 😉

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 I think some courses have reading weeks and some don't-
DD thinks hers (history) is week 7 so early november and she is def coming home as her best friend is at Bath and has the same reading week which means they will not get any reading done at all

She has not done laundry yet-not sure if she has the card sorted or not. In his first year DS got one, put money on it and immediately left it behind in laundrette never to be seen again

I've asked ds about reading week on a couple of occasions. No reply. We are planning going away for a few days second half of half term week. It would be easier if ds isn't coming home as there will be more room in the car without him. But if he knows we are going he will want to come if he's not got lectures.

boys3 · 01/10/2019 21:20

@NotSorry, not sure of the ins and out tbh. DS2 used the Hickling / Barton one and did go down with one of his very photogenic flatmates, not entirely sure of his contribution to working it out together.

Report
boys3 · 01/10/2019 21:24

DS2 has said his reading week is in November (no dates provided) and that he feels coming home for it would be a "distraction". I really do have to credit his attitude so far.

Report
boys3 · 01/10/2019 21:54

@NotSorry; have messaged DS2 however no response yet.

Can I join? I dropped DD off at her pristine, swanky flat last Saturday and tonight she has admitted that the lovely kitchen is now a complete tip with the filth and 'pres' debris of 12 flatmates (and their mates) strewn across every possible surface. The cleaner comes twice a week but the entire kitchen is filthy again immediately afterwards. She said that as well as cleaning up after herself she's having to clean her flatmates' mess just to clean enough surface space to prepare food because nobody else cleans their own mess. Apparently it's been getting her down but she hasn't wanted to worry us but she's freaking out tonight because cockroaches have just appeared in the kitchen. Have any of your DCs at UEA had problems with messy flatmates/bugs, even in the newest halls?

Report
NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 02/10/2019 06:39

@SisterPurification that's dreadful but unfortunately the way it always seems to have been. Cockroaches are a different matter. Maybe if the Accommodation Office becomes aware of them, they can suggest that keeping a cleanier, tidier kitchen will help the cause? They won't want infestations on campus, will they?

Perhaps if things don't get better, your DD could ask for a transfer? Although finding very tidy flatmates might be a stretch.

@SisterPurification welcome. Yes I'd definitely tell her to complain about the cockroaches. They need dealing with.
