Does anyone have recent experience of doing a QS degree and has a view of the different universities.

DS2 is starting open day visits and looking at Loughborough/ Brooke’s/ Portsmouth/ reading /uwe

We have looked at uni rankings etc, but from within the industry do any unis have better reputations for teaching etc.

No help at all, but we're visiting Portsmouth next week to look at QS and Building Surveying, so following with interest!

I work for a main contractor, we recruit mostly from Loughborough, Reading and Greenwich, but QSs are in demand so I wouldn’t have thought any decent employer would be too fussy to be honest, just make sure the course is accredited with RICS or CICES..

Look out for QS apprenticeships, to get a degree whilst working. Generally works on a day release basis, takes 5 yrs but the company pays the fees and a salary.

Reading has always been strong in surveying. I would also look at Sheffield Hallam.

thanks all - see you next week then Seeline - should I wear the mumsnet scarf as I will be taking him but I'll divert to Gun warf for a bit of shopping?

Sheffield open day is this Sat as is Loughborough , hes debating whether to go look at it or not and if he could fit in same day as the Loughborough visit.

I think doing those two is difficult as they are not that close. It took us a whole day in each university if you really want to get a feel for the place and the course. Sheffield is big city and Loughborough is Campus in a medium sized town. Does that make a difference? Do Sheffield in September?

@Seeline

Did you go to Portsmouth?

@Eve Sorry just spotted this!
Yes - we went. DS was impressed, as was I, but as it was our first one (a bit slow off the mark, due to some re-thinking following L6 end of year exam results.....), we didn't really have anything to compare it too Apart from my open day visits over 30 years ago Grin

Still not sure on QS or BS. Hoping to visit Reading in Sept/Oct as they allow you to do the same course for the first year and then choose which area to specialise in.

What were your impressions?

..DS really didn't like Portsmouth - he was comparing with Loughbrorough which was worlds apart, more modern buildings , better facilities . What didn't help was the afternoon lecture being late and no-one seeming to know what was going on.

Portsmouth just seemed very haphazard and less organised than Loughborough. Also going to Reading and Oxford Brookes in Sept.

Definitely planning on seeing some other places too. We were pretty impressed with the organisation though. I thought the tour of the department/buildings etc was particularly useful, and the lecturers seemed really approachable.

If that was poor, I am really looking forward to seeing elsewhere!

Good luck with your future visits!
