Anglia Ruskin

DS has picked his five choices with UCAS he came home and out of nowhere said one of them is Anglia Ruskin. Does anyone know anything about this uni?

Architecture. This choice came out of the blue, sat with his teacher who suggested it. He dumped Loughborough for it.

I went it was awful, and you have to explain for the rest of your life it’s in Cambridge but not Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin.

I think Anglia Ruskin has known strengths in medical sciences, I don’t know wether it has the same reputation for Architecture. Loughborough though has a much higher ranking and bigger reputation but has only just started offering Architecture since last yr I think, but that alone doesn’t mean it’s not strong. You’ll have to go through both courses with a fine tooth comb to separate wheat from chaff.

I had a look in the student room etc. for reviews aaiigghh. not good. It seems to be an international set up. Well we have a private school near here that is part of a Chinese Russian set up. It is only a few years old but the results are not good, many parents have had to move their children to resit their A levels, which makes me jumpy.

ARU's School of Architecture is actually on the Chelmsford campus, not in Cambridge. Home to England's second smallest cathedral and possibly its smallest city centre - when the ARU website says that it 'moved out of the city centre to a purpose-built campus' or whatever, its actually only a few minutes' walk away from the High Street. (As is a lot of Chelmsford, including one of our favourite places, the Essex County Cricket ground).

As for the School of Architecture, I have no idea - it has been running (and accredited) for longer than the Loughborough course, which has only this year started on its journey, so to speak, having just been awarded Candidate Course status.

I cannot find Anglia Ruskin on the list of RIBA validated universities offering the part 1 architecture degree. Therefore it’s a very poor choice because the course isn’t recognised as the first level to becoming an architect. It might be ok if you want to be an architectural technician.

The advice from school is wrong and Loughborough is validated and therefore superior. He’s been poorly advised. Hopefully his other 4 are on the list. Have you checked? Did you or he know this was important?

OP, Anglia Ruskin's course is registered with the recommended statutory board in the UK which is the Architects Registration board (ARB), this is the mandatory board you have to register with to practise and use the title 'Architect' because the title is protected.

The RIBA is a separate membership body that validates some courses but it is not mandatory and you cannot practise as an architect if you are just registered with RIBA. There is no requirement for Anglia Ruskin or any other institution to be registered with them.

What you need to check therefore, is wether Loughborough is registered with ARB, and not the other way round.

The truth appears to be that Loughborough isn’t validated by the ARB and Anglia Ruskin isn’t validated by RIBA. Therefore both a not a brilliant choice! Plenty are on both lists so choose from them. However Loughborough is seeking validation from ARB and given the standing of the university, one would assume they would get it. It’s a wierd one though as Loughborough is viewed as a university with strong technology and engineering departments. If it’s just ucas choices and his other four choices are on both lists, then hopefully no problem.

However I believe it is RIBA that sets the part 2 exams and therefore they know which courses best prep for that and their validated courses mean you are sure about your prep for part 2. It is a confusing situation though.

OP, pls contact ARB for further clarification if you are confused about anything. They are the validating body for Architects in the UK. Anglia Ruskin's course is the only validated one out of the two. Like i said, RIBA is an optional membership body whilst ARB is statutory by law. Loughborough's course is currently not validated by ARB so unless your dc isn't planning on ever using his title "architect" in business I would look elsewhere.
This explains why the school recommended Anglia Ruskin rather than Loughborough. Their advice was spot on.

@Bubbles - You will do well to get your facts right and stop spouting nonsense and misleading people about things you clearly don't know about. Your advise contradicts what the board recommends.
