Advice needed for mature student: LLM with no LLB or another degree?

Need says advice please. I am a FT carer and have been for 15 years, therefore have not worked but have tried to gain as many qualifications as possible from home. I did 2 OU degrees, one in humanities and the other in Crimino!ogy. DD is now being offered a d at centre for several days so I've been thinking of doing postgrad in eit her 'Violence, Terrorism and Global Security' or LLM in hUman Rights. The LLM sounds a bit more of a 'solid' qualification but I don't really know what it involves or how hard it would be without the LLB. Both courses would be at a red brick RG uni and I got a 1st in Criminology if it is relevant. It is unlikely that I will work FT ever so I have no intention to get into Law, but am interested in human rights and do some related voluntary work.

Any advice appreciated as to which might be more useful? How hard is a LL M without the LLB?

My DH is a law professor and says to ask what proportion of the current cohort on the LLM don't have an LLB. If it is very small then the course may prove difficult for you. He says the LLM in his place ( not RG) takes undergrads without an LLB but the course is designed for that.

Also apparently a lot of Human rights LLMs have a lot of international students on them and even if they have law degrees, these may not be that useful on an LLM in human rights which is taught in the UK as the law degrees they have may not be that relevant.

The best thing really is to speak to the course leaders for each of the courses you are interred in but ask for specific evidence that they teach appropriately for students without a UK LLB. Ask how how well those without an LLB do. Get percentage passed and grades etc. They should have been those numbers though they may need to get back to you with them.

Also if there are a lot of

bumbling that is very helpful, thank you. It did say on the course criteria that a LLB or another cognate degree would be acceptable (and I assume that as I received an offer that criminology is considered a cognate subject) I will phone on Monday asking for stats. Could you ask your husband how useful an LLM without the LLB would be? I couldn't obviously practice law but could I become a human rights advisor or advocate?

Also sorry bumbling but I wonder how much of a LLM is actually law related? That maybe sounds like a stupid question, but I mean is it more the science of Law and how it came about/how it differs across the world or is it learning laws by rote? I don't think I would enjoy the latter very much.
