Funding for Nursing degree.

DD has recently graduated with a 2:1 in English Lit.

She initially wanted to train as a teacher but now wants to study to become a mental heath nurse.

Does anyone know if she would she be eligible for funding given that she has already received funding for an undergraduate degree?
She has done some research herself and is under the impression that she would not qualify but given the lack of nurses I wondered if anyone knows a different route?

Yes. Nursing is one of the few courses you can get funding to do as a second degree.

Wrong - student nurses now have to pay fees with a student loan, the same as any other course, it actually says in the page above

“From 1 August 2017, new nursing, midwifery and most allied health students will no longer receive NHS bursaries. Instead, they will have access to the same student loans system as other students. This applies to new students on pre-registration courses (those which lead to registration with one of the health professional regulators).”

Yes, funding has changed (fees, maintenance loan, no bursary), but anyone can still get funding for a nursing degree as a second degree, as per the second paragraph from that link

Students who already have a degree and are planning to undertake a nursing, midwifery or allied health profession subject as a second degree will now also have access to student loans through the student loans system.

I should have been clearer! I meant would she qualify for a loan. From the link it appears she possibly would which is hugely helpful. Thanks all.

Your DD could also look at a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing, which is sort of a 2 rather than 3 year track to becoming a nurse. There's legislation going through which should allow students in such courses to access student loans as per UG students. Any Nursing Department in a University will have an admissions tutor who should be able to talk options through with your DD.

I would urge your daughter to consider if she wants to have 2 x student loans, probably around £30k each so at least £60k to go into a profession where the starting salary is £23k per annum?

The student loans are not paid back at the same time, but one after the other. If she is a nurse - she’ll most probably not even fully pay her first degree loan
