Results day....I'm like a cat on a hot tin roof !!!

Meanwhile...dd is in new York sleeping peacefully !!! Results are due just after lunchtime here..so from 7am her time. She thought paying 12 dollars per day for free WiFi at the hotel was extortionate so will pick up her email when she finds free WiFi somewhere! !!!

This will be my DS2 in 3 years. He never bothered signing up to text or emails for his Scottish Highers to get into uni. I was so desperate to find out that I hacked his UCAS account whilst he was having a long lie.

Yes !!!! She got a 2:1 with honors....so so pleased (she did get up early and used her boyfriends data to check ) and called me as soon as she knew.

Congratulations! 2:1 here too! Results day was yesterday and I naively assumed that meant they'd be posted on line from 9am. DS is also away so, when I hadn't heard from him by mid morning I started to assume the worst. Cracked and sent him a text and he said results would be on line 'by 12'.

When I hadn't heard from him by 12.30 I was a gibbering wreck! I know he was hoping for a first - and didn't miss it by much - but he's happy. All that matters!

Can't wait to get him home to celebrate.

Hope you all have a lovely time bluesky.... we'll more than likely go out for a nice meal when dd gets back next week have graduation late July so need to get something special sorted for that too !

Can someone explain a 2:1 in terms a Yank would understand?

Second class honors, higher. A 2.2 is second class honours lower. A first class honours is a 1, and is very rare in most disciplines.
So a 2.1 is an excellent result, and highly desired by most students.

Thank you! Now I understand what people mean when they say that someone got a first.

Is this just upon graduation? Is there only one first in each year?

In the US, some schools have graduation with honors or high honors, or suma cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude.

It's change in the UK. In my year one girl got a first in our subject (law) and no one for 5 years before that! One third got the next best including me - upper second class. Two thirds of students got 2/2 and a few got a third class honours degree. Now in the UK I think lots more get 2/1 than before and there seem to be more firsts.

Candy, I thought we still had pass degrees in the UK (lower than a third) - we certainly used to.

I read that 75% of recent graduates have either a 2:1 or a first. Some universities award 40% of their students a first!

Degrees without hons are still done in this country. Ordinary degrees.

Rogue - in that case, do you think prospective employers look at where a degree is from and will perhaps value a 2.1 from a more respected university over a first from a lesser one?

Yes, generally a 2:1 from a prestigious university is ‘worth’ much more than a first from a less well thought of university. But it also depends on the subject, as some universities will be much higher thought of in respect of certain disciplines.

Upper and lower firsts have been suggested apparently. This would potentially be unfair to current graduates who have a first which would be classified as an upper first if such a system operated now.

My daughters results were delayed for a week but she finally received them yesterday - she got a 2:1 (was actually just 1% away from a first so she was frustrst d yesterday and struggled to see past that)

She was at work and couldn't check til her break so I was constantly checking my phone for the message
