Uni of Warwick private accommodation

DS has put Warwick as his insurance choice, which means that he's not guaranteed a room in halls. I thought it would be a good idea to put a deposit on a room in private halls so that if he ends up at Warwick we won't have to scramble to find him somewhere to live. I mean the kind of place that's very similar to uni halls, rather than a shared house. Trouble is I can't find anything like that. Does anyone know of any, or can anyone advise me on decent student accommodation in Warwick generally? Thanks.

I think that the closest private hall is in Leamington Spa.

Has you son actually visited the university? It isn't actually in or particularly near Warwick, the nearest 'conurbations' being Coventry and Leamington Spa.

Had a quick search and a couple of private halls of residence in Coventry came up, which advertise themselves as being convenient for both Coventry University and Warwick.

No idea what the bust is from Leam, as I have always visited via Coventry when I've been there by train. From Coventry, the number 12 bus goes through the Warwick campus (unless the bus numbers have changed in the past couple of years).

Elder DC went to Warwick as insurance. He was able to apply for halls in July I think and was allocated halls.
Most second and third year students live in Leamington Spa or Kenilworth, not Coventry. I don't know of any private halls near the uni or in Leamington.
Leamington is a few miles away but there are regular bus services which are very slow and very crowded.
I think there is a very good chance your DS would get halls, not necessarily his first choice though.

Thanks for the info, all. Yes, DS did visit Warwick so we are aware that it's not actually in Warwick! I wasn't very clear in my post.

Brokit, that's good to hear.

I'm relieved to hear that they probably get accommodation!

Some universities, where Hall accommodation is in short supplyfor insurance students, hold a housing weekend where those without hall accommodation are invited to meet similar students. They find like minded ones and go house hunting. Hopefully it won’t come to that and he’ll get something if, indeed, he actually goes there!

Hi OYBBK, and thanks, Bubbles. I checked out the Warwick accomodation service's website and they say that they guarantee on campus accommodation for first years who have firmed. I emailed them to ask if this means that they might find off-campus acc. for insurance students and they said their allocation policy is not finalised for 2018-19, but will soon be on their website. I'm hopeful that they will find something for all first years, maybe with an event like the one Bubbles describes.

Warwick uni act as agents for loads of private landlords in Leam and Coventry. I know that last year they had a bit of a nightmare with campus accommodation as more students met their offers than anticipated. Some were having to share rooms initially. When DS (in second year now) applied for accommodation they didn't open applications until early September, so first and insurance choices were equally dealt with. Sounds like after last year they may have changed that?

Warwick uni is in Coventry, Most Warwick uni students live in Earlsdon or Chapelfields or Tile Hill in Coventry. Some live in Leamington Spa but the actual town of Warwick is quite far away.

More than half live in Leamington according to the Warwick uni accommodation peeps. DS1 lives in Earlsdon in Coventry but spends a lot of time socialising in Leam. Buses are often and fairly reasonable but Leam is 8-10 miles from campus.

Check out The Union and Station House in Leamington - both the kind of accommodation blocks you describe - aimed at students but privately owned.

I live close to Warwick uni and I'm really surprised any students would trek all the way to Leamington... I rarely even go in the car!
Anywhere in Coventry would be OK, and get the bus into town and then another one out to uni. It's too far to walk from town.
Look at tile hill, Canley as closest but still requires a bus. Cannon park fairly close. Warwick uni is out the way of town, it's a campus on its own.

Do many cycle in from places?

SunnySummerDays the vast majority live in Leamington, a lot of student nightlife is there. While Coventry and Canley are nearer they would not be among many other Warwick students.
Some do cycle in but you'd have to be a fit and confident cyclist as traffic is heavy.

DS1 cycles in from Earlsdon. A lot of his route is across a golf course.

You've surprised me about them going to Leamington!! What a jaunt.
I know a lot live at home. Cannon park always full of students in Tesco. Really would have thought Coventry easier to live, Coventry centre is great too.

There's a brand new private student has opening soon at Cannon Park behind Tesco. Think it's called Signature Student Living. Ive just driven past and it's looking very near completion.

DD1 is at Warwick as insurance and got in fine to accommodation, and certainly didn't mention any of her peers having issues.

She's extremely happy there despite it not being her Firm Offer.

I know that Tesco really well, every visit to DS1 involves a shopping expedition for 'heavy stuff.' beer
