Musical Theatre and Performing Arts University courses.

DD2 is 17 and she wants to do A musical theatre or peforming arts couse at university next year, Does anyone know of any universities that do thes sort of courses? She is very good at Drama and Singing.

Does she have to do a degree or could she go to stage school if she's very good or does she want the degree for security?

depends which part of it she wants to major in there is a hell of alot of scope. try the ucas website (google ucas)

My dd is keen on looking at acting courses. Some places (like RADA, RSAMD, etc) award degrees but admit after a traditional audition and call back process - lasting for months as far as I can tell.
Has anyone been through this process and how does it work? what do you put on UCAS forms? Is there a limit to how many places you can apply to? I find the whole thing impenetrable!

We have now found several universities that do either Musical theatre or performing arts courses.
We are going to the open Day at Midlesex university on Friday 1st June and she has been thinking about what other universities she would like to visit.
aig how old is your daughter and is she doinfg any sort of Drama for A level? My daughter is doing BTEC Performing Arts certificate and award at college.
Your daughter should get some help from her college or school with her application. You used to be able to apply to 6 universities but from next year it wil be five,

She is doing AS levels at present and will do Drama A2. I'm sure the school will help her, but I would like to understand the system. My ds is doing history at Uni so we have been through UCAS before. What I don't understand is how the places like RADA expect people to apply on their application form and when you involve UCAS. It doesn't make sense to me!

I don't know if this helps but I've been involved in the admissions process for a very competitive university Drama course (not as a Drama lecturer myself). What UCAS forms should point out are the real signs that the student is committed to a career in the performing arts - i.e. not just very good at them, or "passionate" (which can mean anything). Applicants who make it to the interview/audition stage need to say that they have some recent experience of performing (and that can be anything - hospital radio dj-ing goes down as well as some grand school production).

I would say that at 17 your daughter probably wont be accepted as they like them to have some life experience. Drama school, not stage school, that I would consider to be for school age children, is not for the faint hearted. It is very competitive and a lot of hard work. Toadstool is right, it's not easy to be accepted on to a drama course. Dont think you cant afford drama school. The majority of people who get accepted on to courses get DADA's or scholarships so dont give up on drama school till you have applied. You apply first and then worry about the fees later. I have a DD in third year at drama school and it took almost two years to settle in and she was 19. Most people who apply try two and three time before they are accepted so dont be put off. Hope this will be of some help, I'm not being negative just realistic.

Just an Update on DD2 just 18. She has now sent off her UCAS form and has applied to do a Musical theatre or performing Arts degrees.
She is also applying to a couple off Musical theatre colleges for over 18's.
She is doing Performing Arts at college and belongs to a good Musical theatre yoouth group.
She played Audrey in The Little Shop of Horrors in October. Also she has ben in several other performances both with this group and college
She has had a lot of advice from her tutors at college.

Just another update, DD2 has an audition this evening. It's for Me and My Girl which will be playing at the New Theatre, Cardiff in May.

DD2 has got an audition at Newcastle College for the Musical Theatre Foundation degree.
We have to get her there for 10am on February and we live in Cardiff!

Iyaaa guys, just a quick thought... as all your kids are into Musical Theatre/drama, I thought I'd let you know that atm Alliance and Leicester (the bank) are running a campaign with DENISE VAN OUTEN for kids aged 16-21 who have decided against* the UNI route!
It sounds amazing.. you'd get to spend a day with her in a masterclass situation etc. If you wanna be in with this chance then all you gots to do is go on her Facebook page and find out how you can sign up. She's really big on not needing to go to uni etc, so I think this really could help you guys.

DD2 did get an auditionwith LIPA this year but didn't get in. She has now got a place on TVU Acting for stage and media and she will be off in September. The course is being run at Kingston on Thames college.
