What do your student dc tend to do during Summer ? DD likes to be very organized and plan ahead but doesnt want to plan a holiday with any of her friends until she has some idea of what she will be doing and where she will be living over summer.
She will be staying in halls again so no accommodation in uni town from end of June until end of September. Ideally she wants to spend it working but not many jobs locally if she chooses to stay at home. She has been looking into jobs abroad for summer season but doesnt drink and this is putting her off as a few of her friends did a season on a campsite last summer and said there was an awful lot of drinking/drinking games involved

Camp America? Well organised. No drinking. Different camps so lots of chances to focus on what interests you.

Is she looking to work abroad ? If she has a specific skill like a sport or experience with children that may be useful. Her uni might have jobs over the summer too if they run summer schools,it's worth looking in to . For accomodation some of the private halls in DCs uni cities do short term let's so you can stay in a room for summer months if she needs to stay in uni city

I forgot about camp America a few of DC friends have had great experiences with it but unfortunately both my DC's courses has placements which meant they didn't finish uni in time to meet start dates for most camps.

What about a vac scheme in a sector of employment she may want after university? Working for the summer is ok but not specifically aimed at a career. She will presumably want a career after university so getting relevant experience may be worthwhile even if she has to commute to do it.

Good thread. dd has been wondering what to do in the summer before starting uni. Preferably maths based, if that's possible.

I've found which looks to be a good start for undergraduates.

DS is only in his first year, but has a part time job that he can come back to and wants to to go interrailing in Eastern Europe with three school friends next summer, which should go ahead if our student finance issues are sorted.

Oh and DS works for a chain, sometimes as a waiter and sometimes as a manager. He started as a food runner when he was 16 but has built up!

for the halls which have the summer contracts can students stay in another city over summer e.g. if dc was at uni in Newcastle but found a Summer job in Sheffield would they be able to have a summer contract in student halls which isnt in their Uni city ?

You would need to apply to the university or Private hall provider in the other city to book and get rates for the halls that offer summer accommodation. If they have a 50 week contract with their Hall where they are at university, I am not aware this can be swapped to another city and another hall over the summer - unless this is a feature of the contract of course.

One of dds friends is working for PGL this summer, they have sites in UK and France/Spain if she wants to be abroad

If the halls are private halls they often do separate summer contracts, my DC first year hall contracts were 44 weeks, I think you just had to be a student as DC friend who stayed on was living with international students doing a summer course, a placement student, art college student and students were mixed from two unis in the city. It probably varies depending on city and halls provider
