Any welsh people here? Question about DS funding/loans?

We live in Wales and DS has just had his place confirmed at an English uni. He is the first in our family to ever go to uni, so we are all learning as we go and finding the funding side of things a bit confusing. Also what with the changes to the welsh fundng (I believe its means tested for this year and onwards) finding someone in the know is proving hard.

A while back I sent off all the student finance info and have recently received a breakdown of his grants/loans.
His Student finance email is broken down as follows:

£4296 - Fee Loan
£ 4954 - Fee Grant

Maintenance Loan £ x amount

Welsh Government Grant: £900

Can anyone explain what/where the fee grant (£4954) has come from? Is this a welsh grant? If so why is there the £900 Welsh Government Grant?

I'm just trying to understand it all as I am just confused at the moment. DS is not able to explain it either but less concerned - he assumes its the welsh element, but I think its important he fully understands exactly what comes from where etc.

Because the lucky Welsh students only have to part fund their tuition whilst the English students have to fund the whole £9250! So yours is split into the loan (what he is funding) and the grant (what all the taxpayers in the UK are funding).

I suspect the Welsh Government grant might be part of a maintenance grant too if you are on a lowish income.

The tuition grant is from the Welsh Government. They pay half the tuition fees.

This is the last year of the welsh govt grant for uni fees!

Thank younfor clarifying that. I wasnt sure if the funding had already stopped.I thought it had. I believe in future it will be means tested.

It is a very unfair system. English students seem to fare worse off compared to Scottish and Welsh students.

Fee Grant they don't pay back, the Welsh government grant they don't payback as based on household income. The maintenance loan is paid back but you can claim part loan cancellation fee once DC has had the first 3 instalments of maintenance loan, if you pay £50 off your loan they will clear £1500 off total.
