My Science Teacher Job Application Woes!

user1497126393 · 18/07/2017 12:29

This is more to rant as use that as therapy more than anything but I am so frustrated and feel completely injusticed here!

I am applying via MANY agencies for a Science Teacher job in time for September this year and still looking/asking/hounding YET last year, last week; I hardly applied at all and got an interview and a job as a Science Teacher like that clicks fingers....yet this year DIDDLY SQUAT!!

I mean what the hell?!
I know i'm technically unqualified as I don't have the teacher training qualification but I DID try, last year and the year before! but guess what.....I was giving the choice of doing that (as I got in to the TT course) or JOB as a Teacher....of course I picked Teaching Job!!

I may not have teacher training (TT) but what I DO HAVE is a Bachelors and a Masters degree in the hard sciences and a handful of years experience in Science teaching!! AS an ACTUAL Science Teacher!

So this year, I didn't bother with even applying for TT Training course and NO JOB!!, NO JOB INTERVIEW!!! NONE!!!!!!

FRUSTRATED ISN'T THE WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

This is my Cover Letter...that is my proof!

Not sure what response or whatever to get from this but, meh...i'm having a cup of tea now to chill out.

OBJECTIVE
“From the plethora of experiences and jobs I had gained, teaching is the much-desired choice and the career I feel passion for. I wish to continue dedicating myself to for years to come”.

EDUCATION

 GNVQ 1 and 2 + AVCE SCIENCES.
 BACHELOR OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE

Dear Sir/Madam:
I am writing for the Science Teacher vacancy.
I am interested in your educational institute as a Science Teacher.

I can offer 4 consecutive years of experience in teaching Sciences at KS3 +GCSE double/triple levels.
Successfully handled responsibilities of merit professionally executed, like: coordinating/marking of GCSE coursework; creating, teaching and coordinating a GCSE program and intensely worked with EBD students expelled for violence.

Keeps a cool head, eg: I needed to attend to ~300 anxious prospective students on enrolment day and rationally organized them into segregated queues.

I am also able to create detail-orientated lessons, delivered with raw innovation, passion and potency.
Thank you for reading this, enjoy my curriculum vitæ and visit my LinkedIn profile.

Then hopefully after further consideration perhaps you can ask me more in person, as I would be honoured to meet you.

Sincerely,
Emily.

I think your cover letter sounds clumsy and is quite oddly worded .......however I'm really not the best person to give advice on English as mine quite poor. Maybe you could get some feedback from other people who are more knowledgeable.

Get QTS, or apply to really challenging schools that are struggling to recruit. We do not employ anyone without QTS.

Have you thoughts about teach first?

  1. You need to write in full sentences.
  2. If you want to work as a teacher you actually need to qualify as a teacher.
  3. You need to consider what you want to say in your cover letter - no one is employing you based on your ability to get children to line up, however fancy the language you use to say that.

Your cover letter is a bit odd, I don't think that schools are interested in the fact you can write long papers. Where is the information about what you can bring to the school, what achievements did you have whilst teaching, are you prepared to train?
"handled responsibilities of merit professionally executed" not even sure what you mean by this. Your proof of a cool head, seems to me, that you organised some students into a queue.

I'm not sure why you think it's ok to be a teacher without a teaching qualification, so perhaps that should be you first step.

Every application has to be tailored to the institution and the person spec. Speak to a senior member of staff who could give you specific pointers. You do not use key phrases re progress/ achievement etc.

I would ask for an application form. I would get qualified. Why have you not stayed in your previous jobs? Try supply teaching? I am never keen on poor English in an application. What university are your qualifications from?

First thing I'd do if I were you is get some help with CV/cover letter writing. Most of the sentences don't actually mean anything, most of the sentences aren't sentences, and a lot of it doesn't seem relevant. I have done recruitment for my industry (not teaching) and I wouldn't progress an application like that. Get that sorted with help from a professional and you might get a chance of getting through the door for an interview. However advice from people on here who do teach advise that you really need a teaching qualification. I would have concerns about how you would be able to communicate complex subject material in a coherent, understandable manner when I can't even understand what you are trying to convey in that letter.

Agree with others. Crap CV. Unqualified. Very poor English. Not surprising you're not getting anywhere (but heartening to know schools aren't that desperate).

Oh and actually quite embarrassing to post so much personal detail on MN - seriously OP at least ask MNHQ to delete your LI profile.

There's an awful lot of actual, qualified and experienced teachers doing supply now. Schools will hire them in preference.

Is English a second language for you? I work with lots of people from the Philippines and some of your phrasing strikes me to be similar.

'Rationally ordered them into segregated queues' - Do you mean that you asked them to line up according to a list that you had?

Wording on letter is clumsy - changes of person in the sentences, 'honoured' etc.

Good luck with your applications Smile

Obviously not actually being a qualified teacher is an issue...

Agree with the above comments about your cover letter being oddly worded. Also the content isn't great - where's the passion? Why do you want to teach? Why your subject in particular?

why are you posting the exact same post across a number of boards and them ignoring all advice offered ?

Would a degree in biomedical science mean you were qualified to teach physics, chemistry or biology?

Report
RedHelenB · 19/07/2017 22:06

Biology is not as much of a shortage subject as physics . Spend a year doing your PGCE

I am afraid the covering letter is in very poor English which sadly may be consistent with at University of Beds and an OU degree. Did you get poor A level grades too?

BubblesBuddy · 19/07/2017 23:29

I have yet to see a teacher appointed with just a cv. We need a lot more info to process an application which is why we use application forms. If you are applying to an agency, get their form and work through it in a coherent way. If it is difficult, lower your sights.

Report
crazycatgal · 19/07/2017 23:38

The english in your covering letter is quite poor and you have focused too much on your university assignments rather than what you can bring to teaching.

I also think you were lucky to get a job as an unqualified teacher, if you want this to be your career you need to get QTS.

Report
mumeeee · 20/07/2017 09:41

Your covering letter is to long and clumsy..Also you need to have a teaching qualification to teach
DD,1 has a first in a Zoology degree but she then did a PCGE in Biology before she could be a teacher
She also did extra training which enabled her to teach all ,3 sciences to A level
I don't know how you have been a Science.teacher before without a qualification.
So until you get yourself on a teachers training course no school will be interested

Injustice is not a verb. You need to polish up your English, I'm afraid.

This is very odd, I thought it was a joke at first. Are you filling in applications forms? You won't get anywhere with just a CV and covering letter.

Also your application above is very strange, why are you singling out
and highlighting putting 300 applicants into queues, for example? You will need to talk about experiences involve a lot more skill and dedication than that, it looks very odd that you think this entirely unskilled, run of the mill task, is one of the highlights of your achievements.

I am also able to create detail-orientated lessons, delivered with raw innovation, passion and potency.

I don't know what this means. What is detail -orientated?

overall, the English is very poor and idiosyncratic.

I don't know what to suggest really. Do a PGCE or schools direct, or similar. ( you may have to work on your English to get it up to the required standard.)

There are plenty of science teaching jobs out there, I'm sure you could find one quite easily, if you sort out your application a bit.

Exactly!!
I sent this NOT knowing how to delete/edit posts, so first off i've got to say; I was NOT supposed to have as many of the same post issued....So Apologies from me on that, this was not intended as spam.

Secondly- some of you are kind of dicks, as I was upset, frustrated and feeling despair for the fact that this year I apply for many and get nothing as opposed to last year when I only applied to one school/agency and got the job off the bat!

I obviously felt and still feel a huge injustice and from this plea of needing either: bad news given diplomatically, nicer put downs or advice I get is slagging off of my grammar (while I'm upset and frantic) and even a put down the universities that issued me my 2 degrees which by the way I am bloody PROUD OF considering I have been recently diagnosed with ASD and suspected to have dyslexia to boot....so thankyou for slagging off my "crap writing" and communication style, very much appreciated (!) :P

I would try completing two degrees in hard sciences with ASD in this harsh, unforgiving and brutal and seeing how far you get :)

However HORRIBLE some of those posts back were, I have taken quite a few things in consideration and REALLY looked into that Cover Letter (NOT CV as some have quoted it to be!) and you are right; some sentences were very off and didn't make scene or were just a bit silly.
Unfortunately, the only way a person like me can get employment is through agencies as people with ASD....well, our communication skills are sub-par but we do bloody try! and agencies are quite the opposite. In hindsight it would of been nice if they told me to shape up the Cover Letter and how because it is a working progress.

I was brave enough to try and seek help in this alternative way, while clearly upset and disheartened but a number of you have added a more bitter experience for me to add to my bitter experiences already, so thanks for that.....you should be proud of berating an Autistic.....feels good to kick someone when there down doesn't it?

Also, thank you to those who weren't nasty about the whole thing.

Glass houses........................
