Anyone know anything about Medicine and clearing?

Just that really. I can't believe that there are ever places available. Surely, if they are they must be for candidates that have already been interviewed by that particular university rather than someone who hasn't? Thank you.

I don't know about medicine, but I know that for nursing if you have interviewed somewhere and been rejected then you generally can't get a place through clearing on that course with that uni - you've been rejected for a reason other than academic results. I would assume the same with medicine. They might also ask for a copy of the personal statement on results day to consider along with the confirmed results.

Others seem to approach narrow misses asking if they want to be on a waitlist or simply approach them in August.

One way to spot patterns is to look at the end of Student Room threads for applicants to the various medical schools the previous year. Expect to see several post results day examples of posts along the lines of 'I just got offered a place after being rejected...'

Surely it is unusual for these highly sought after courses to go into clearing? There may be a few holding offers who don't make the grade but universities could be flexible about admitting them if their interviews and other tests went well. I wouldn't be holding my breath on clearing.

Thanks all. You have all confirmed my assumptions. I've read about certain courses having clearing places, ( I think UAE did in 2011), but I thought that it would be well nigh impossible to actually secure one of those places.

The issue, as I understand it, is that because of the NHS funding, individual medical schools need to get their numbers right. Not too many, not to few. So late offers and a certain amount of fine tuning around results time.

I think some unis contacted students for interviews in Aug last year fireplaces in Sept.

Maybe worth calling med schools once results are out? Friend's DS narrowly missed a place based on a slightly off UKCAT score (was having a bad day), but phoned and was put on a waiting list and got a place as people decided not to take up offers and go elsewhere.

No. of domestic applicants are going down.
No. of spaces are going up (slowly, over several yrs).
So more likely to be in clearing at some point, yes.

Last year had the first medicine clearing vacancies that I've ever seen, which means it's possible they will have them this year too.

Nothing is certain though and if they have any, I guess it will be very limited.

My friend has set up a Facebook group about uni, including clearing etc if you're interested please join us, it's called WIWIKAU what I wish I knew about uni. She's set it up as last year our DCs were waiting for result and it was sooooo stressful

I am mentoring someone who is going to go through clearing on Thursday. He ended up on 2 waiting lists for med then rejected. He thinks its worth a try to ring them on Thursday asking if any places came up as he is confident he has done well in his exams. We both have absolutely everything crossed for him.

Not sure how different medicine in particular is but I got my space on a midwifery course through clearing. They can be quite competitive and there what a lot of clearing interviews for very few places

There have always been a tiny number of highly desirable courses in clearing I know of 1 vet med in 1991, 1 vet med 1992, 1 med royal free 1992, 1 med Liverpool 1999. They are few and far between, but have always been there, you just had to be like lightening on the phones.

med schools very rarely used to go into clearing but there were some last year. What they have been doing for years is quietly accepting people who drop a grade, having reserve lists and sometimes phoning people who were rejected after results to offer a place.

Every year one med school (changes each year) seems to make a hash of admissions. So it is worth keeping an eye on the Student Room threads to see if a school has been complained about a lot. That would be the first one to ring on results day if needed.
