Accommodation Problems

dd seems really depressed about going back to second year due to tensions with her house mates.

She loves the university and is doing very well with her course. However the friends she committed to living with back in spring have become less and less friendly.

Any ideas? If it was university accommodation she could swap but it is a private sector landlord. I don't want her to be miserable for a year.

It depends on her tenancy agreement, she would probably have to give notice and find a replacement for her room just like any other renter.

She needs to look at the tenancy agreement to see what it says about giving notice early. It will show if it is a joint tenancy and what happens if she tries to end early, She might be able to get out of it if she can find another student who is accepted by the landlord and the other tenants .
Perhaps students union has details of students wanting accommodation. Of course if she does that she needs to find a new place herself.
There is info on Shelter website

Thanks. There is a university helpline which she is going to call for advice.

I wish she had taken a room in halls or with other friends. Too late now.

It's so hard isn't it. Sad
DC and friends had to pay a deposit on a house in November last year- a month after they all met. There's a good chance once they're all back they'll settle, or maybe DD will find someone to swap in- places do come up in other places inc halls.

Thanks. I'm hoping you are right Apocalypse. It might settle once they are back together. I get the impression that social media hasn't helped. There is one very dominant girl.

It will be hard to find a replacement at such a late stage.

Hopefully it might settle down. Does she have a good group of other friends she can socialize with?

She has other friends from her course and societies. I've told her to socialise with them and regard the accommodation as somewhere to lay her head if things are a bit unfriendly.
