Deferring university place at the last minute?

Long story but DD suffered from significant mental ill health last year, and whilst improved is not fully well, and is also dealing with lots of other issues. Despite this she did ok at her A levels and got a place at an RG uni, due to start next week. Yesterday she admitted that she was feeling really anxious about going but can't bear the stress of going through the application process again, so will go anyway. My question is, would a uni consider at this late stage deferring the place for a year, on medical grounds (I am sure the GP would provide evidence)? I realise that the his is a nuisance, and we will have to take the hit on accommodation deposit etc. I don't want to push the matter further unless there is a real chance of this.
Many thanks.

Ask them!

It could be that they have too many candidates and would be delighted; it could be they would not consider it, but she has absolutely nothing to lose by making her case.

With medical evidence, yes, they will - nothing to do with whether they have enough students! Just contact them and explain.

Are you certain?

I'm sorry, I really hope I haven't given wrong information, but when I've been involved in admissions - which I've only been a little - I was told that we cannot always allow a student to defer at a late stage.

At every university I have worked out (includes highly selective courses), OP's DD would be allowed to defer under these circumstances. Deferring would be considered better than having her start and then find she really can't cope.

Last minute requests to defer just to take a gap year would however be viewed very differently.

I'm really sorry, then, OP: I've made you nervous for nothing, and I hope your DD had a good reception when she spoke to her university (or feels much better about speaking to them now, if she's not done it yet).

Thanks everyone for correcting me.

That is very helpful all of you - she is going to contact them today and talk it through.

OP I hope they agreed. DD was very ill a year ago and then had to batten down the hatches and get through Yr 13. It was tough and I am not surprised when she turned round at about Easter and said she wanted to defer. They allowed it even though the course said on their website that deferral was only allowed under exceptional circumstances.

She is busy saying goodbye to friends, but confessed today that she is not even a tiny bit envious. Instead she is looking forward to a year of proper recovery. A cookery course next week, so visiting of friends, then working a ski season and hopefull Camp America. This time last year she could barely get into school. Hopefully next year she will be at University because that is where she wants to be. There is lots of time and no need to rush.

Good luck.

My daughter contacted student services yesterday to pull out of her uni place and they were really good with her.

I hope it went okay and she is really better about things now.

What did she decide, OP?
