Just scraped her French Bac, which uni?

One of my charges got her bac in June with 11.26 out of 20.

She is now embarking on a year of intensive language and culture courses in the UK.

She is extremely likeable and, unusually for a French kid not at the top of her class, has very good school reports and will get a great school reference from the head.

She wants to study Business/Marketing with a focus, if at all possible, on HR Mgt. Where can she go that is going to provide a quality experience for her?

I have looked at Lincoln, St Mary's Twickenham, Canterbury Christ Church, Southampton Solent, Nottingham Trent, Brighton and Portsmouth... but I don't know any of these places first hand, and am anxious she doesn't end up in an unsuitable environment with little or no real teaching going on.

Can anyone advise? Are any of the names above less desirable? Any I may have overlooked?

Thanks if you can help, she really deserves (and wants) a suitable place.

Portsmouth, Trent and Lincoln probably the best of those. Avoid Solent.

Royal Holloway is the go-to university for French candidates with less than lovely bac marks. Or, for worse marks still, Goldsmiths.

If she is looking at Southampton Solent she might also look at Bournemouth. Bournemouth has long been popular with foreign language students and the University is rising up league tables fast, albeit from a low starting point. Very good a digital marketing, though I don't know about HR. Good for finance as there is a big financial sector in Bournemouth. Importantly a nice place to live plus lot of out of season holiday accommodation available to students.

I would prefer Brighton as a nice lively place to be a student ialthough I don't know how good the course is.

Don't be too conservative. I had a candidate with 11/20 a couple of years ago who applied post results and got offers at RH, Kent, Brunel and one other I can't recall. I was very surprised - I thought it was a long shot.

Wow, some very helpful comments. Thanks. Would not have imagined she could aim for RH or Kent! I will make some more calls.

Thanks for the warning about Solent, titchy. I had looked at it for a sailing-mad sports science candidate a few years back, iirc. He ended up at St Mary's and is doing well (but getting no sailing in!).

Know someone else at Brighton, not an academic sort, loving it but revealing very little about what he gets up to!

Think I'll call RH, Kent, Brighton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Trent, Lincoln... if they have suitable courses for her.

Is Brunel "apprécié"?

Thanks again for your help

I think that website advice on standard offers can be misleading. Some of the lesser universities publish certain standard offers as a PR exercise but are much more flexible in reality...

I don't know anyone who has actually taken up a place at Brunel.
