Sociology?

Have just completed Access to HE Diploma and now considering options...

Initially wanted to do MH Nursing but changed to OT. As I'm restricted to my area, I applied to the only local university which offers a measly 15 places! I'm in a reserve list, but not holding out much hope for a place this year on such an over subscribed course. For info: I do have a lot of relevant experience in the field of OT.

So I find myself in a quandary. I don't want to lose the studying momentum and I've thought about applying to do a Sociology degree. I really enjoy the subject and my tutor has encouraged me to think about it.

Just wondered if anyone here has a sociology degree? Would you recommend? Or any other advice?

Thanks in anticipation.

I lecture in sociology and in my opinion it is a brilliant subject to take.

You need have a strong interest in issues surrounding equality and diversity and be able to deconstruct taken-for-granted norms. It is an essay based subject so you have to be able to cope with lots and lots of reading and be able to put an argument together giving your assessment of the evidence. In many ways it is a more political subject than Politics!

There is some good information on the BSA website here

Lots of the equality gains in society come from sociological research, although people don't often realize this.

The sociology of health is a big area within sociology, so that interest will not be wasted either!

Thanks! I think I'm going to apply through clearing.

My local university has a large, respected sociology department. I really enjoyed the sociology which I studied on the Access course. I did well with my marks there too and my sociology tutor said that I have an analytical approach.

I'll check the link now, cheers.

Great.

Can I suggest having a read of Dead White Men by Ralph Fevre and Angus Bancroft whilst you are waiting!

Good luck!
