DS too heavy for IKEA Antilop

DS is about 90th percentile for both height and weight, so he's less than 2 and a half but has become slightly too heavy for our beloved IKEA Antilop high chair.

We tried sitting DS on a regular chair and he got upset. DH liked the Antilop as he could leave DS for 30 seconds whilst getting food etc. and know he wouldn't fall out. We could get a booster seat that straps onto a chair but I assume then we wouldn't be able to leave him at all, especially if it is one where you sit at the table rather than having a tray.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions. DS doesn't seem happy/ready to move to a normal chair and was crying when we got him to try sitting in one of ours. I was hoping we could just transition to a Stoke Tripp Trapp or similar but neither DH nor DS seem keen. I know you can get a baby set with those (there are some cheap ones second hand on ebay) so I don't mind if it would only last 6 months, but I suspect everything with straps and seats etc. is only aimed at those under 15kg.

Why wouldn't you be able to leave him strapped into a booster seat?



huack/Stokke chairs have straps on them, and you can remove the tray so he can sit at the table.

My dc's just sat on dining chairs once they got too big for their highchairs (around 2.5). They quickly learned how not to fall off because they realised that falling off isn't fun. Tbf my 5yo still falls off occasionally when she's messing about

Sometimes they get set in their ways about stuff and don't like change. It just takes them a bit of time to get used to new things like that. I was always just like "if you want to eat then you sit in the chair, your choice" and they gave up fairly quickly and sat in the chair. Though I understand not every child would give up so easily.

My DD has been sat on one of these since 18mnths as she sat in a small chair at nursery fine from 15months. She’s never fallen off it and has always been able to climb of safely herself www.ikea.com/gb/en/cat/junior-dining-chairs-45815/

FWIW baby set on tripp trapp only suitable to 15kg.

2.5 is a perfectly reasonable age to transition to a normal chair, with or without booster. Mine were out of a highchair by their second birthday or sooner. And usually knelt up at the table.

If he is not keen on a proper chair can you make a big deal about him being a big boy now and highchairs being for babies.

IKEA urban chair is doing us fine at age 5. Seat height nearly same as Antilop and very stable for avoiding tipping over backwards.
