I am going back to work at the beginning of July after maternity leave. I was FT but I would like to go back PT. I would like to do 3 days Monday to Wednesday 8.00am until 5.30pm. Do I have to put this request in writing to my boss? If so is there a time limit on doing so IYSWIM. Do I have to do it a certain amount of time before I go back to work?

TIA for any advice.

I think it depends on the employer - if I remember correctly I think I went in and had an informal chat about it first, about two months before I was planning to go back, and we have a form to fill in to request flexible working which I filled in once me and my line manager had agreed on my new working hours. If you have a good relationship with your boss, probably best to put the idea to him/her earlier rather than later in case they want to sort out a job-share, etc.

You need to give them enough time to consider it so I'd ask now as you know exactly what you want. They have to consider every request like this by law, but of course don't have to say yes, you might want to have some answers ready about how you'll manage your workload, how it will affect your dept/other colleagues etc. What things will not get done etc if you're only p/t. My employer was absolutely fine about it, I chatted to him about it (took the baby in) and then did the official HR thing. I think it's 8 weeks before your due back at work date that you need to advise if you're coming back later but don't know about changing hours. I think you've plenty of time though.

Thanks, I have a really good working relationship with my employer and my boss. I was thinking of ringing them and having an informal chat with regards to my working hours. Then if they think it is viable I will go down the formal route just so that everything is done correctly.

I have heard from my colleuges that things have been said with regards to keeping the person who has taken over my job whilst I am on mat leave. If it is true then I don't think that there will be a problem with regards to coving the work and hours etc.

i met my boss in starbucks for a chat and to coo over my baby iirc. but she always knew p/t was on the cards, and we are both flexible with each other.
