Teachers always said "if you don't work hard now you'll end up a shelf stacker"

Well right now I would love to be a shelf stacker or a checkout girl but can't even get a job at Tescos/Asda/etc. Seriously they never seem to advertise.

Why is it so hard to get a job?

I have 2 degrees, 10 GCSEs, NVQ in cstomer services and a BTEC in Business and Finance. Years of experience in administrator type jobs. But had 3 years off to do my last degree and now seem to be unemployable. Don't even get an interview and I have good refs and a good CV.

Are you applying for the right kinds of job, ie, things that are relevnat to the qualifications you have?

Well my degrees aren't really relevent, but there aren't any jobs that I see advertised that are relevent. So I'm currently applying for mainly admin roles as thats where have the experience, plus my BTEC and NVQ are relevent.

I've just signed up with some temp agencies yesterday so fingers crossed. And the jobs I've applied for today I've left my most recent degree off the CV!

have just checked teh Tesco website - apparently you have to ask in store:

"Customer assistants (in stores & distribution centres)

For a customer assistant job in one of our stores or work as a picker in one of our distribution centres, we ask you to visit the store or centre in person and talk to the people there.

The first two links below will help you find stores and depots in your area; our new stores section shows if we're planning on opening near you soon. If you know of a store near you then the final link below will direct you to a page where you can download our application form to complete and take in with you (although you will need to contact the store directly to enquire about opportunities)"

ASDA:

How do I become a colleague in my local store?

Unfortunately we're not able to take applications for our stores on the web yet. We're working on it. In the meantime, the best way to get a job with us is to contact your local Job Centre Plus or ask for an application form at the Customer Service Desk in any one of our stores. You should always bear in mind, of course, that we're a leading retailer and most jobs with us involve some weekend working. We do, however, ensure that everyone has at least one weekend in four off.

Iota, I new that about Asda and have been and spoken to them. I didn't know that about Tesco so thanks, thats very helpful. I'd previously found something on their website where you can search for instore vacancies and there were ones in Birmingham and London but not near me. But I'll fill that form out and hand it in, maybe they keep it on file till they get vacancies. Thanks.
