Interested in becoming Maternity Support Worker

I'm interested in starting a career as a Maternity Support Worker perhaps leading on to training as a Midwife. Does anyone do this role and can give me advise on what I could do in the meantime to better my chance of getting this job when a vacancy becomes available? Or just give me an idea of your day to day job? Thank you
