Paging the lawyers....

After much deliberation have decided to go back to work as a PSL and have today pinged my cv across to recruitment consultants for a couple of current roles. From previous threads, I know a few Mumsnetters have already trodden this path. Those of you that have: Any advice on what makes or breaks a PSL role? I know some of it is personal preference, but are there any aspects of the job you hate? Any points you wish you'd clarified at interview?

Sorry. Professional Support Lawyer. A heady mix of knowhow, reserach and business development - i.e., non fee-earning.

yes the flexible working bit - make sure it is agreed up front - I know a number of psls whose so called flexible job ultimately turned out not to be very flexible at all!

also pay structure - many cases of psls getting no or very small pay rises - find out if you are paid in line with associate rises.

suggest you find out exactly what you will be called upon to do.

I am not a psl but manage the 2 in our team here. When we recruited the second one, my first psl confessed she had always hated delivering training, so we looked for someone who loved it. And one of my psls can be called upon to do some fee earning when we are swamped, which she likes, actually, but not everyone would.

Don't suppose you're looking for a property finance role are you?

Agree re pay structure. A friend of mine (we used to share an office) went back as a PSL and didn't think to check out pay structure. She gets the same kind of pay rises as other non fee earners (secs etc) ie inflation plus a teeny bit whereas the associates generally get nice big fat pay rises.
