Working with elderly people - activity co-ordinator?

I currently work as a supply teacher and want to begin to make a move out of it. Ideally, I would like to work in occupational therapy with dementia patients but can't afford to do this as a MA as I'm a single parent and can't afford to give up work now they have scrapped the NHS bursary.

I want to get into working with older people, organising activities within care homes or something similar. Unfortunately all these positions need experience which I don't have or can't get as I would have to give up my current job, which is just paying me enough, to work as an entry level HCA., which I wouldn't make enough money to live on. So I'm considering volunteering for a while on a regular basis, maybe in the evening, to gain the experience.

Does anyone else do this type of job/can anyone offer any advice on getting into it?

Thanks in advance.
