New Job Offer - what now?!

I have worked in a GP surgery for 7 years and decided some time ago to start looking for a new job. I interviewed last week and was offered the position yesterday subject to references. However, my current boss is not the easiest person to talk to. He will be contacted for a reference - at what point should I tell him about the new job offer? (Background - recent merger with another practice, very stressful, not been a smooth process, general practice is at breaking point...)

They need references from someone to cover 3 years, both my manager and deputy are new, months rather than years. Can I skip them and request references from my previous manager instead?

I thought a job offer would be a lot less stressful than it is!!

If you're intending to accept the job offer then you're going to have to tell your manager anyway - ?!
I'd give your new employer the details for both the new manager and the old one and say how long the new one has been in post. That way your new employer can decide whether to contact just one or both.

Thanks very much, I'll speak to HR on Monday and offer up both.
