Career change after SAHM for 5 years. HELP!!!

So, I am considering a return to full time employment but have NO IDEA what to do or where to go to get help.

I have been a SAHM for the last 5 years - with a bit of part time social media work and a bit of OU study in the back ground.

I originally qualified and worked as a doctor in South Africa and did a bit of locum work here when I first moved to the UK before having DS.

However, I have zero desire to return to medicine, not because I did not enjoy the work, I loved it, but I found the emotional aspect of it challenging and felt very much unsupported in it. Basically I was unable to distance myself enough from my patient's experience and thus came home every night with a ton of emotional baggage. (Probably not what I should tell prospective employers).

Currently I work from home, running the facebook and twitter pages for a family business and am studying Maths through the OU.

I think I would like an analytics type career but have no idea how to even begin to get into it. I am more than willing to start at the entry level (have no choice but to) and very keen to continue training to facilitate career advancement.

We are not planning on having anymore children (husband has had the snip) - so surely this must be a positive, no danger in training me up just so I can go on Materinty leave Wink and I am still relatively young, in my early 30's

Any advice or help gratefully received

Hi, have you considered pharma industry/CRO roles? Your medical background woukd be an asset here, as would your Maths degree when completed. I think to get an entry level pharma medic role you require GMC registration. Alternatives might be medical writing , drug safety or biostats. If you are London based you could also look at some of the large healthcare research houses/ consultancies who require market analysts to work on client projects and write reports. When you say analytics what are you thinking of?

What about research ? or an previous poster suggested pharma industry...roles like pharmacovigilance, Medical affairs, regulatory affairs. Do you have statistics in your course? Maybe a module in Biostats would be one to look into, or take a look at a role in a clinical research. Take a look at carrottpharma for some ideas of jobs etc.

Inpharm jobs should also be worth a look. Can you say whereabouts you are based OP?

I have GMC registration but not a licence to practice, so currently I cannot be involved in clinical roles. Not that I want to.

I am based in Northern Ireland currently but it is likely that my husband will be relocated back to Yorkshire by the end of the year. Realistically this means that, if so, the children and I will probably move in the Summer to get them settled in before the new school year.

I will therefore most likely be looking at roles in Leeds/York.

I do have stats in my course currently, but it is rather basic, could look into adding something more tailored.

I will have a look at Inpharm and carrottpharma

How about something in research but not from the clinical side more from the admin/education side? I was sat next to someone on the train down to London the other day who worked for one of the universities in their research team and worked with the local NHS trust setting up research projects and clinical trials. Might be worth exploring?

I knew a couple of ex drs who worked in the healthcare practices of consulting firms. Can be long hours and is mostly installing IT systems but well paid and with a medical background you could do that in a healthcare context - it does help people and leverage your experience but not much emotional involvement!

Oh yes, also what about some sort of healthcare management role in a hospital? Could stil have depressing cases to deal with though but no personal involvement/direct medical responsibility.
