Work

New job and holidays

I've seen a job that I'd really like to apply for, however the advert states that you can't take any holiday within 10 weeks of the start date due to training. We've got a family holiday booked an paid for 5 weeks after the given start date.

Would it be a waste of time to apply, or do you think if it came down to it and they offered me the job there would be some way to negotiate on this?

I would try negotiating. Any hols already booked are honoured for new starters where I work (NHS). I don't see any reason why they couldn't take a gap in training.

Depends on the job/type of training. Where I work, the training courses are set (it is a 9 week training course for 10-12 people at a time) so if you had a holiday booked, you would be asked to wait for the next training course as the training couldn't be paused for you iyswim.

When they have gone to the trouble of specifically stating it I would think the no holiday is pretty inflexible.

Whenever I was offered a job I was always asked whether I had any holidays already booked and they were honoured. The statement wouldn't stop me from applying, if they really want you, they will accomodate you.

Thanks all. I might apply anyway and if it comes to it, maybe I could negotiate the start date instead and start after my holiday. (Or more likely I won't even get an interview...)
