Anyone done a degree ft with DCs at primary school?

I've done the same type of work since I finished university. A couple of years ago I looked more into occupational therapy and did some work experience days and really liked it. I'd like to retrain as an OT when DD2 starts primary school in five years time.

It's a two year intensive course or a three year course with holiday breaks, which is what I think I'd have to do. There are four full tome placements and teaching is four days a week in term time.

Has anyone done anything similar? How did you do it in terms of pick ups and childcare? How did your DCs find it? What do I need to consider? Some ppl have been very supportive (as is DH), but I've also had a lot of responses that make me feel I'd be neglecting the DDs. I would miss them a lot, but I'll be 41 when DD2 starts school so I wouldn't want to postpone much longer. Plus I feel quite depressed at the idea that having children means I can't change anything ever until they've left home.

Hi Philbee, Im currently in 2nd year of uni ft and a single parent of 4. Im not going to tell you it's easy, in fact I actually changed my area of study just so the hours would work better for my children. Since doing that we manage well. My little ones are with childminder/school usually from 8-4. Just be careful when studying health profession that lectures can run till 5 or even 6pm so get a clear picture of expected timetable. Your placements should be workable as OT's are generally 9-5 i believe so should'nt pose too much problem. Good luck in whatever you choose to do, I'd say go for it. My life is insane but my children love that I'm learning to, respect me for it and know they will benefit in the long run. A good childminder is key though, particuarly if regular hours are required. Let your little one help vett and see the provision to help them feel comfortable with new arrangements. Good luck x

Thank you, that's very useful. I'd really like to do it part time but it's not funded then and we couldn't afford it. It's hard to know whether to go through all that or just stick with my area of work and try to find other things I can do with those skills.

I am doing it next year with a 2 year old, a 6 year old, full time placement and working in my actual job. Im studying social work. Im not worried about work load tbh Ive done a lot worse.
