Has anyone any advice/experience in commuting with children?

I am a working mom of 2 under 5s, who is in the Army. Yet again my husband and I have been allocated jobs in different locations. In order to live as a family, rather than weekly commute, we are considering new childcare options, as we will both be required to commute 1 hour (each way) to work.

My son will be starting school when I commence my new post and so I am considering applying for a prep school place near to my place of work and commuting with my 4 year old and 2 year old on a daily basis. There is a nursery at my workplace for my daughter. Has anyone every done this? If so, how did they find it?

The other option is to leave the children in childcare where we live and employ an au pair/consider a nanny. To date I have only used nursery.

If anyone is in this position I would be grateful to hear from you. Since the birth of my son in 2010, my husband has been weekly commuting and I think the time has come to live as a family and stop the evening FaceTime ritual!
