What can I do - I've lost my nerve

I worked as a journalist then about five years ago I got axed from my job, I then had two jobs in communications. I then had two children and now want to do something again. I would like to use my transferable skills but try something a bit different. I've been out of the journalism game a bit too long, I'm sure no-one will want me and besides the bottom fell out of that job market when the recession hit. And there is always someone younger who is prepared to do your job for free these days. I'm not sure PR is for me - I could sell anything for toffee.

I can't afford to re-train and my husband works crazy hours in a very inflexible profession, childcare will be a total nightmare, I have no family nearby. I just feel stuck.

Poor you, you sound a bit fed up and I understand your position. Trying to get into a new career track when you already have kids and can't rely on your partner to pick up the slack is tough. I am in a similar situation. My husband works long hours so isn't able to share nursery pick ups and stuff. And unless you are bringing in loads between you so you can have a nanny enabling you both to work late, then it's quite hard to balance. Have you thought about using your writing and research skills to write freelance for magazines? I work at a charity and we have lots of ex journalists who write copy and interview people at the projects we work with. You could also do something in marketing?
