Music & Drama G&T at an independent school

DS (lower 6th) has been given G&T status at his independent school (for musical talent). I am somewhat cynical and think it's just a way of upping their arts G&T.

He is a contemporary musician and taking his music Tech A level a year early after one year of the course. He's also taking music A level (plus drama and history, and an extended Music Tech project) and has ambitions of becoming a producer and music writer (not a musician). He has very credible musical and stage performance records both in and out of school.

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing in independent schools?

A DF of mine has a G&T daughter (in music) at a state school, and that means she gets extra support. But, my DS already gets a huge amount of support from the music department at his school as he is one of their star performers (and has been for a few years) - should I, as a parent, be expecting something more from DS's school?

I'd welcome any advice as I am a novice as far as this sort of thing is concerned.

My ds1 was given G&T status at his selective and high performing independent senior school. Meant absolutely nothing in terms of extra support or even recognition and I don't think it counted for anything in his university application. Added to which it created animosity amongst other parents who heeard about it.

Thanks Crystalglasses - kind of echoes my gut feeling about DC's school. I also thing it's probably not worth mentioning on his uni application as his extended project would probably count for more.

I've encountered anomosity from other parents too - not directly, but I've heard about sarky comments via friends! Sad isn't it!

DS has also had a bit of grief from other musicians (classical) in the school, but he just shrugs it off......

Same happened to my son who is a T&G.
